To Malka and Avi: It is 10 years since Jim´s passing and only because I searched the Columbia University remembrances did I discover that.your husband/father had suffered through the tortures of ALS before his passing. We became close legal colleagues and then friends when he became our FCC attorney in D.C. to challenge the license of a small town, yet powerful, radio station in Dodge City, Kansas in the early `80s...over 40 years ago. I was a newly practicing lawyer who shared Jim´s passion for social justice when this radio station began broadcasting malicious racist and anti-Semitic programming. I was the lawyer in the trenches while Jim´s expertise in radio got us through the maize of FCC regulations, a Congressional subcommittee hearing and then the revocation of their license to broadcast, a very rare occurrence then. At that time, historically, only 2 or 3 licenses had ever been taken away. Only one other pertained to anti-Semitic broadcasts. We even had Newton Minow, the very first FCC chairman under JFK in our corner. Suffice it to say, It was Jim´s expertise and my stubborn pursuit of "justice" that led to our success! You can look me up on Linked In if you want to connect. I am 2 years older than Jim, a retired lawyer living in a suburb of Kansas City. I have a son who´s a lawyer in Chicago. I do hope you receive this. Jim must be looking down on us from heaven with great consternation about the current state of affairs at the FCC and in our country generally. I would enjoy communicating with you if you wish. I am happy to share my recollections of your much respected husband/father. All the best. Sincerely, Naomi Kauffman

To the Weitzman Family, with deepest condolences in the passing of Jim. We first met when Jim was a lawyer for the Spanish Broadcasting System radio consortium in NYC. He brought life and light to the radio station and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him there. I personally had the privilege of working with Jim as assistant to the CEO of the company. Although he was not engaged with SBS after he started his own radio business, he will be always remembered and cherished for his contributions. Farewell friend, you will always be remembered and my your memory be for a blessing. Haydee

I was so sorry to hear of Jim's passing. Our parents were very good friends. When Peter and Ann 's McDonald's empire grew to three restaurants, they asked my mom to handle the books and payroll, a job she loved and worked at for many years.
Jim had a great zest for life. I am saddened to hear that he succumbed to ALS. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I'm so sorry to hear that we've lost Jim. I'll remember him as a very knowledgeable and passionate gentleman with an incredible sense of humor. I first met Jim in the 70's when he was the station attorney for the radio station I worked for in Colorado.
As the years passed, we found opportunities to work together many times, and I will cherish those memories.
RIP and 73, Jim - you made a difference in so many lives.

My sincere condolences to Jim's family. He was my FCC Attorney in the early 1980's and I had also known Peter D. Weitzman in the late 1970's, and actually sold him a Honda car. Although I was a few years younger, I remember Jim on his Ham radio in Milwaukee, while I was growing up in Sheboygan, WI. He got my call letters, WTRW, when a boat sank in the Mediterranean Sea...and I also worked for him on a project at Camp Ramah, in Wisconsin in the 1980's. I will miss his spirit, and sharp thinking.
