I did not know Charlie. However, he is the epitome of not letting his maladies define him. I've been there, I know and I preach it daily.

My child met Charlie freshman year of college and they instantly clicked. They have been great friends ever since. Charlie and my child shared a love of soccer, badger games, camping, fraternity formals, same circle of friends, etc... His endless optimism, love of life, and hope for what was to come inspired my child more than words can express. My child feels that this loss has left a hole than will never be filled because "angels like Charlie" only come along once in a lifetime. During this difficult time, my child is focusing on all of the positive influences that Charlie was. My child feels there is no reason to complain, no reason to not live every day to the fullest, no reason to not give life all you have to give because if Charlie could do it (and he did!) while battling Ewings as bravely as he did (with an endless smile on his face), then those who are blessed with their health and life ahead of them really must do the same. My child is doing it as best they can through the pain and tears at this time. They are able to push on because they know that is what Charlie would have wanted and that is what he would have done himself.
I write all of this because, as a parent of multiple children, I have never seen anyone inspire any of my children as much as Charlie has. I have heard about him for years, been in awe of his bravery and love of life, laughed at the stories and pics that were shared with me, admired the friendship that he shared with my child and just wanted to say to his parents that their child seems to truly have been a blessing from God and an angel that walked among us for 23 years and I am so blessed that his path and my child's path have crossed; because of your Charlie, my child is a better person. Because of your Charlie and the stories that were shared with me about him, I want to, and need to, be a better person. Your son was amazing, he was loved and admired by so many, and he touched/changed more lives (for the better) than you will ever know. May God bring you comfort, and may you find comfort in knowing how far reaching your child's beautiful soul reached, and is still reaching, and will always continue to reach.

My name is William Graves from Ann Arbor, Michigan. I am a relative (cousin) of Charlie's mother, Carrie and her brothers John and Robert Mead, Charlie's uncles. I recently heard about the passing of Charlie after his long battle with cancer. I didn't know him well, but I wish I had. After reading his obituary, in the short time he was alive I knew he lived a rich and full life. The Graves family William III, Maryanna, William IV, Jim, Anne and Jane send our deepest sympathies and condolences to the Burton and Mead families, especially Carrie and Mike, during this difficult time. God bless you. William Graves IV

Dear Carrie and Mike - am saddened and heart broken over your loss. Charlie sounds like an amazing young man who brought joy and life to everyone he met. In my role at Children's, I work everyday to try and support research into finding better treatments for kids like Charlie. He is an inspiration for all of us in this fight.
I hope and pray that his wonderful memories will be a blessing to you and the entire family.

Dear Carrie, Mike, and Emily,
It was 7 years ago when we were honored to help grant a wish that Charlie had to attend the Final Four college basketball game in Atlanta. First, a fun party at his favorite restaurant, BD Mongolian, then off to enjoy time with his Dad and cousins. A wonderful teenager who became an inspirational young man. We are deeply saddened by the passing of Charlie.
With love, Robin Gerson & Tim Riley (Glendale)

Mike, Carrie, and Emily,
Over my 23-year teaching career, Charlie was one of my very favorite students. My kind, gentle, sweet, funny "birthday buddy"-- he was a gift to all of us who knew him at USM. And a fellow Badger, too! The world just hasn't seen any better than Charlie Burton.
Much love to you during this saddest of times,
Emily Ihrke
