Appleton. Age 86, died on Sunday, October 9, 2005, at St. Paul Elder Service. Fr. Wendelin was born Leslie Shafer on March 5, 1919, in Jackson, Michigan, son of the late Leslie and Martha (Stachowiak) Shafer. He was invested in the Order in 1938, when his name was changed to Wendelin. Fr. Shafer was perpetually professed in 1942 and ordained in 1946. He was a missioner in Central America for 52 years and joined the Central American Vice Province many years ago. Fr. Shafer returned to the states upon his retirement and most recently resided at St. Paul Home. He was a good and faithful servant and will be missed by all who knew him. Fr. Shafer is survived by his sister, Constance Schauble; many nieces, nephews and numerous other relatives. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Lorraine McGee and Wendita Steinke and brother, Dave Schafer. The funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, October 13, 2005, at ST. FIDELIS FRIARY, 1100 North Ballard Road, Appleton, with Rev. Dan Anholzer-Provincial Minister of the Capuchins of the Province of St. Joseph, officiating. Visitors will be received at the Friary on Wednesday, October 12 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and again on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. A Rosary Service will be held on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The interment will be held at St. Lawrence Seminary, Mt. Calvary, WI.
