Februrary 21, 2010 My deepest sympathies to `Slick's family. I met Slick when I hired in at Ford Motor Co. in Claycomo at Christmas down time when only maintenance was working in 1976. This was the begining of along friendship and becoming close friends almost like brothers. We welded, walked and spent many lunch hours together sharing stories of our families and the trials and tribulations of the past with many jokes and laughter. As we visited Slick at the nursing home he still had his smiling face and still wanting to tell jokes. We'll miss his happy face. Iam glad I had the chance to know and work with you. Peace to you my friend.

Definition of Community; "Family, Friends, Co-workers, Church, Town, State and Country." Slick was all about "Community". I am so blessed to say that I was part of his community.

This man gave of himself all of his life and I am so thankful that I was a small part of it.

I would not have known all I do about the Monarch's if it weren't for Slick. I would not have learned the basics of welding if it weren't for Slick. I would not have learned about giving to my community if it weren't for Slick. I would not know what orneriness is all about if it weren't for Slick. (haha) I know Slick touched many lives and I hope that everyone is as thankful and blessed as I am.

Along with a few photos, a signed baseball and many hours spent with Slick at Ford, I have a lot of wonderful memories. Thank you Slick for sharing, caring and loving. We will meet again in Heaven Brother.

We never met Slick, but had the good fortune to meet and visit with his son Al. We met at Jazz and shared some great experiences relating to our fathers. I knew what a wonderful man he was, through you Al. Our last conversation was just 10 days past. I made a point to introduce you to my lovely wife, because spirits like yours are rare and I knew that you would connect as ours did. In your pain and sorrow just know Al that you are in our hearts and the next time we meet we will toast our fathers. Their spirits live within us, forever, because of who they were and what they gave to us. Peace be with you and your family now and in the days and years to come.

To the family, my deepest sympathies. I'm glad I got to meet and spend time with a man of such charactor, wit and wisdom. The story of Mr. Surratt will only be known by those close to him. His deeds and his life will be richly rewarded by God in heaven. The things 'Slick' did for his family, his community and his friends will last forever. We are all better because of him. I'm glad I got to meet and work with the likes of such a man. Rest well, my friend.

Slick will be sorely missed. He signed 2 baseballs for my two daughters one night at Ford. Word got around and everyone wanted to see them. The girls and I used to go see him at the nursing home, and he wanted them to sit on his lap, so he could give them a kiss them and tell them how sweet they were. I used to visit him back in the maintenence crib, so he could tell me a story about his baseball days or his early days at Ford. He always told me he was no #2 in the plant...God bless this wonderful man, and his family. Charlyn "Charlie" Burns Local 249 Chaplain Chair

I knew of, more than I actually knew Mr Surratt, but as a 40+ year UAW worker & 20 year Maint Clerk it is still sad to hear of the passing of another of our Union Brothers. As usual, there are no words; but sorry to hear of it!
