Lois Hansen Metheny, 83, of Lake Winnebago, MO, passed away on October 11, 2011 at the home. A celebration of her life will be held at a time and place to be announced. Lois was born November 13, 1927 in Manitowoc, WI, the daughter of Delmar and Vera Pfefferkorn Hansen. She was a 1945 graduate of Lincoln High School in Manitowoc and attended Park College in Parkville, MO, where she met her husband of 62 years, Dave Metheny. A resident of the Lee's Summit (MO) area since 1948, Lois was active in numerous groups and organizations, was the founder of "Lois's Ladies," and was the gifted creator of a variety of arts and crafts. She also was a number one fan of her two musical sons, Mike and Pat, and she set the gold standard for wives and mothers everywhere. Survivors include her husband Dave, sons Mike and Pat, daughter-in-law Latifa, grandchildren Nicolas, Jeffrey and Maya, and numerous nieces and nephews. Lois's sister Marilyn Hansen Berkedal preceded her in 1980. Above and beyond everything else, Lois was adored by those who had the pleasure of getting to know this fine lady and who were fortunate enough to enjoy her good company and radiant smile. Hers was a life that touched many others and was lived to the fullest. Donations in honor of Lois Metheny can be made to the Metheny Music Foundation, PO Box 7004, Lee's Summit, MO 64064. I'm afraid I cannot say significantly more than what I already did, through that piece of music that I wrote down, when she was still with us.

https://soundcloud.com/toseethesun/grandma-still-alive

We never met personally, and we never talked on the phone either. I just felt a kind of admiration and gratitude (well, it's difficult - if not impossible - to put these feelings into actual words...) for the two great kids she brought up, and without the influence of whom I wouldn't be who I am (in other words, of course I would still exist, but I would be... different). I feel, here and now it would sound quite 'theatral' to address something directly to her (as she probably doesn't read this... or... who knows?!)... but if I could call her on the phone, I would say something like "thank you for all that".

Mr. Metheny, Mike and Pat,
Mrs. Metheny and Lyle May's mother sat behind me at the Milwaukee performance of The Way Up. After the concert I overheard them speaking to each other. Mrs. Metheny exclaimed, "Well, it looks like we raised a couple of geniuses!" She said it with a mixture of great delight but also humor and humility, not quite taking much credit. They spoke for a couple minutes more. One can get a sense of people very quickly sometimes. Especially people who are comfortable with themselves and have an abundance that overflows onto and around others. It was easy for me to see that Mrs. Metheny overflowed with many wonderful attributes. I am so glad to know she touched many many people and that she was appreciated. I am so sorry for your loss.

What a legacy this lovely woman has given us. I know the music but have no personal relationship with the family. Just listening, though, I can only imagine what love it must have been that has nurtured this talent and beauty. We should all be thankful for her life.

What a beautiful woman! And obviously a very special person to have raised two of the best musicians in the world. Through their music you can just feel the love and respect they were brought up with. I spoke to her once on the telephone, as one of millions whose life has been profoundly touched by the Metheny genius, yet she made ME feel special. Thank you, Mrs. Metheny.

In 1992 I had the privilege and honor of meeting Lois (and Dave) Metheny after one of Pat's concerts. From there Lois and I became pen pals for many years, and I met Lois in person several times again over the years at Pat's concerts both in Minnesota and Kansas City, and she always recognized me and remembered who I was, and she always took time to visit with me. I am so honored to have been given the opportunity to know Lois Metheny. My sincere condolences to the entire Metheny family and to Lois' extended family (cousins, nieces, nephews) and close friends.

Dave, Pat, Mike and family. Please know that you are all in my prayers as you pass through this part of the journey. From the time I met Lois, in the showroom of the Dodge dealership in Lee's Summit, when I bought my first "band van," to all of the random meetings through the years around town, she was always kind and caring to me. Like a mom, she would always ask me about my family, my music, my travels and my unique style ministry of the gospel. It was always a blessing and a joy to see her. Her life was a gift to so many and her infectious smile is a legacy of its own. A life well lived! God bless you all, Paul Clark

Dave, Mike and Pat,
As I look at the kind statements of others, I have to agree with all of them. She was indeed the pillar of your family and was a friend to me when I needed one. She loved my children and they loved her back. My daughter Sarah was one of her many "adopted" daughters. I think often of the advice and strength she gave me. I especially love Latifa's sharing of the Longfellow poem. May God's comfort be with you all at this time of mourning. She will be waiting for us where she has gone-all we'll need to do is look for the lovely smile and the most mischevious, brightest blue eyes in heaven.

I wished to somehow meet Lois personally, but it didn't work out.. although she still got my message that I sent her, to express my gratitude, to say thankyou from the bottom of my heart and soul, for bringing two such incredible kids to this world. Otherwise I didn't have the chance to know her life, still, I have a feeling now, like an old family friend who would wish to visit. (If I Could.)

Thank you, Lois, for existing, and for all that you did, have a good journey onwards, and see you one day.

Nature

As a fond mother, when the day is o'er,
Leads by the hand her little child to bed,
Half willing, half reluctant to be led,
And leave his broken playthings on the floor,
Still gazing at them through the open door,
Nor wholly reassured and comforted
By promises of others in their stead,
Which, though more splendid, may not please him more;
So Nature deals with us, and takes away
Our playthings one by one, and by the hand
Leads us to rest so gently, that we go
Scarce knowing if we wish to go or stay,
Being too full of sleep to understand
How far the unknown transcends the what we know.
