David Dick Obituary

David Dick, a TV correspondent during CBS' news broadcast heyday and more recently a chronicler of the hamlet of Plum Lick in his native Bourbon County, died Friday at his home. He was 80.

Mr. Dick had suffered from prostate cancer. He vigorously fought the disease, often speaking publicly and writing about the toll it had taken on him.

At his life's end, he wanted to be at his home in Bourbon County.

Although he had reported from all over the world, in his later years he grew to know Kentucky from Paducah to Pikeville. He and wife Lalie, a woman he never ceased to praise, sold books all over the state, but they were particularly well-known at the Kentucky Book Fair in Frankfort each autumn.

Mr. Dick also wrote a column for Kentucky Living magazine, in which he was identified as "a retired news correspondent and University of Kentucky professor emeritus ... (and) a farmer and shepherd."

In his May column, he wrote: "A life lived well as we learn each day to keep it simpler and saner, that is our security. That is the inheritance we leave for the next generations."

Mr. Dick grew up in Bourbon County, graduated from the University of Kentucky as an English literature major and became a reporter at CBS News in a time when being a reporter on CBS, home to Walter Cronkite, Roger Mudd, Eric Sevareid and Dan Rather, was the epitome of broadcast stardom.

Mr. Dick's most celebrated work at CBS was his coverage of the aftermath of Rev. Jim Jones' 1978 cult mass suicide in Guyana, in which 900 of Jones' followers drank a cyanide-laced drink and lay down in the jungle to die. Before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Jonestown was the largest civilian loss of life in American history.

He also was the CBS correspondent when Arthur Bremer made an unsuccessful assassination attempt on presidential candidate George Wallace at a Maryland shopping center, for which he won an Emmy.

Although his focus softened in his later years as he wrote about rural life, Dick's 2002 book Follow the Storm detailed his work as CBS's South American bureau chief from 1978 to 1979, when he covered civil wars in Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala. "Our specialty was paramilitary: Hit the ground running, find the storm, go to the eye of it, and serve it up for dinner between Andy Griffith and I Love Lucy," he wrote.

I remember David Dick from 1971 when he came to Tampa on assignment. I was a noon anchor and reporter at the CBS affiliate. He was sitting in the news room in the afternoon as we were preparing the six o'clock newscast. He asked me where he could get a good hamburger. I suggested that Tampa had several excellent and nationally-known restaurants. I was used to other CBS crews that came to Tampa and always ate at the best restaurants (on expense accounts, of course). Mr. Dick just shrugged and said, "No, I just like a good hamburger." As it happened, a really good hamburger could be had a block away. He proceeded to walk on his own and praised the burger when he returned. During my time at Channel 13, I met the likes of Charles Kuralt and Dan Rather. The behind the camera crews always showed up in rented Cadillacs (each member always had their own Cadillacs). I was profoundly impressed with Mr. Dick's sincere humility and salt-of-the-earth nature. I realized after his time in our newsroom that I should be like him, not some of the others that I encountered. I have too much respect for him to refer to him by his first name. I only knew Mr. Dick briefly, but it was a lifetime of wisdom with which he left me.

David Dick changed my life with a small piece of advice: keep a daily journal. I was new at the news game with CBS news when I had the pleasure to work with David on several stories during the war years in Central America. It was in Nicaragua when I first met him. I remember him and his incredible body of work, fondly. I'm sorry I just found out of his passing.

Dear Lalie
I was so previleged to know you and David and count you as friends when we lived in Dallas years ago. I remember listening to David read from his journal and could listen to his stories for hours. He was also a kind and gentle soul. I know you miss him terribly. I'm so sorry that I have so belatedly learned of his passing. You are I my thoughts and prayers.

I took a summer class that Mr. Dick taught at the University of Kentucky back in the mid 90's. A fellow student had sent me a message the other days asking me if I knew Mr. Dick had passed away. We both shared a few memories of the class and reflected on what an amazing opportunity we had to have him as a teacher. So sorry for your loss...know he impacted me and many others in a positive way.

Dear Mrs. Dick: I just heard about your husbands death and I want to express my sympathy to you and your family. I E-mailed you and your husband years ago about genealogy and the Dick family name( my maiden name). I was thrilled when the two of you actually corresponded with me. My father and I used to watch your husband on TV and we were great fans of his reporting. The wonderful thing about being a writer is that your husbands words will live on, and in his case remain as testament to the wonderful person he was as well.

Dear Lalie, Sam, Ravy and family:
We lost a supreme writer, an excellent reporter and a wonderful man with David's passing. He truly was one of the best of the bunch in the days when CBS News was the jewel in the crown they called the "Tiffany Network", and after he retired, David continued to inform us, teach us, amuse us and inspire us as a writer and columnist. Lalie, I treasure the time you and David came to Jackson during the Downtown Christmas celebration in 2005 to meet with the folks at the book fair. I had just made the transition from a broadcast weatherman to a print journalist, and both of you were cordial and gracious to me. I hope I've learned a lot from his work, and have enjoyed it as well. May God look over all of you at this time. David Dick was definitely one-of-a-kind.

I was saddened to hear of the death of David Dick. I was fortunate to have been one of his students shortly after he joined UK's journalism program. He had a generous spirit, always happy to share his considerable experiences and insights with his students. My senior year, I and a couple of other lucky Kernel staffers got to take a road trip with David and his wife. Our destination was the Investigative Reporters & Editors conference in Washington, D.C. David had planned to introduce us to Dan Rather, who was the keynote speaker. I don't remember much about the conference or even about Rather. But I do so fondly recall that trip. David kept us all entertained and mesmerized by his many stories and observations as a broadcast reporter on the road. He will be missed.

After I read his wonderful book on Jesse Stuart, I dropped him a note - the first time I had ever attempted to commend an author. I was flattered to receive a hand-written acknowledgement, which I tucked inside my book. I was thrilled to share my excitement with him the following November at the Ky Book Fair and was always anxious to see what he had to say from Plum Lick in Ky Living magazine. What a loss but what a wealth of words he has left us.

The Commonwealth lost one of its voices on Friday. I was honored to have been one of his students during his first year back to UK. His use of imagery and letting the people tell their stories in their own words weaved a tapestry that connected our culture from Pikeville to the Pennyroyal. I cannot thank him enough for his influence and inspiration upon myself and others. God bless you, David.

The Commonwealth has lost one of its true voices. I had the honor of having David as a professor of Journalism at UK in the mid-eighties. Compared to today's 24-hour news cycle with talking heads, argumentative banter and lack of substance, David's style will be sorely missed. He let the people tell their stories in their own words as he painted the descriptive scenes like an Old World Master. Thank you for everything. David White, JOU '88.

My deepest sympathies go out to the Dick family. David was my broadcast journalism professor at UK in 1987 and I have never forgotten the way he treated his students. I have known David and Lalie since 1986. David was not only a colleague of my father's at the journalism school, but a close family friend. David, despite his many accomplishments, was a humble man. I remember the first time seeing the Emmy on his desk at school, basically as a paperweight. David also cared for my grandmother a great deal, a fellow North Middletown-ite. The generosity of he and his family are legendary in Bourbon County. I think he is now up in the clouds, raising his sheep.

Dear Lalie---You know our love and thoughts have been with you during these last weeks. Our heart is heavy because David is such a loss to those of us who loved and knew him personally, and such a loss to his beloved Kentucky as a whole. What a rich life! What exceptional contributions! He was as noble in his dying, as he was in his life.

What you did to make his dreams come true is known and recognized by those fortunate enough to have known you and David over many years. You and he developed a history of Kentucky through your writings and observations that will live on for generations.

Our hearts go out to you and all of your families. Be comforted that
here was a man who saw his dreams come true. There are few who depart from our world knowing that.,

We will be there tomorrow and Monday.

With love,

What an amazing man. David was my advisor at the School of Journalism at UK and was a constant inspiration. After graduation I also had the honor to work briefly at WKYT with Sam. Although I'm now a librarian and not in journalism (another way to dispense information to the public), I use things I learned from him all the time, especially a love of etymology.

I've enjoyed the window into his life and Kentucky life through his writing, especially now that I live in Washington state. Reading the tales from Plum Lick always warms my heart and makes me think fondly of my roots. I was able to keep in touch over the years through the times when we both ended up at St. Hubert's at the same time on a Sunday.

He will be missed.

I lost a special friend today. Not only was David one of my favorite professors at UK, but he and Lalie have been very helpful to me in my writing career, and I felt special on those few occasions when I was fortunate enough to sign books seated near him. David wrote mostly non-fiction, and one of the reasons I finally wrote a non-fiction book was because of the influence he had on my life and how much he loved the people he met in his travels through life. Tonight, on the day he passed from this life, I will sit at a table at Joseph Beth, signing my first non-fiction book, and I will try to treat those who stop by the way David and Lalie have always treated those who passed their way. Thanks for everything, David. I will miss you!

David Dick was both a professor and a mentor to me when he was dean at the UK School of Journalism. He was an inspiration; someone you never forget. Not too long ago, I read a feature he wrote about life and his battle with cancer. My father had just passed, having also battled the disease for the better part of five years.
