I found out about this late last night and was deeply saddened. His work will live on so we may all enjoy the person and actor he was. This just shows once again that life is short. We must all try and live each day as if it was the last. Take care.

Out of the blue, I felt a sudden need to see Babylon 5 again. I went to my storage, pulled some tapes, and spent the past couple of weeks reviewing some of my favorites. Then I turned to the web, to see what had become of the internet presence of my old favorite. Here, I discovered the loss of a true gentleman, Richard Biggs. I cannot express the dismay I have felt learning of the loss of one so young, possessed of the clear-thinking right-mindedness so lacking in the modern age. Robbed is an understatement. If I were to dwell upon it, I could only come up with a phrase that is less of an understatement; articulation of this tragedy is beyond my ability. By all rights, we should have been treated to another 20-30 years of this man's craft - yet we have a legacy from him nonetheless. I'll be spending some more time with Richard now. I hope that there is more of his work waiting out there to surprise me, but there can be no question but that that is the very thing we, his fans, have been robbed of. To his family, I can only imagine your loss, the injustice of it. We his fans are your family too; our hearts go out to you.

Dear Lori and boys,
I was very fortunate to have known Rick very briefly through working with him at conventions. He was a lovely person, always caring and compassionate. I know that he is with the Lord and Savior.
I was honored to have been able to attend his service and to have been able to give you a brief condolence in person. Again, I say that he will be missed and that we can only live our lives in a way to make him proud, and to know that families will once again be together with our loved ones in Christ. May the Lord richly bless and keep you all. He giveth peace that passes all understanding.

To the family of Richard Biggs. I have a very special memory to share. Years ago, when Rick was on Days Of Our Lives, I was a big fan. I used to write to him all the time. One day out of the blue I got a phone call from my friend Janice Willcocks, then president of his fan club. She surprised me with a phone call from Rick! It was at a very difficult time in my life (we had just lost our home in a fire) and it was such a wonderful gift! Then I was given guest passes to a DOOL event, and later on tickets to a play he was in. He was a very special person. =]

Like many people who know of him, I have never met Mr. Biggs. In reading these pages I am so heartwarmed to know that a man who portrayed such a strong character had such strong character himself. It's what you hope for when you watch something that inspires you to strive to be a better person. That the person who is relating that character to you is a good person. A person who would also inspire you to be a better person. It is obvious that Richard James Biggs II was such a person. I guess it's sort of practicing what he preached. God bless you, sir, for showing us what a good man can do; on set and off.
Having lost my father at nineteen after a life growing up apart from him (my parents were divorced when I was five) I pray for comfort for your loss and rejoice in the time that you had with him.

Please know that those who knew your dad, loved him. He was a warm and caring person. I think he was able to show some of himself, his compassion, in his interpretation of the role of Dr. Franklin on Babylon 5.

I was so heart stricken to learn of Richard's passing. He was a great actor and a kind human being. I had the honor of meeting him at a convention a few years back and he was nice enough to have a picture taken with me. Richard's character on B-5(Stephen Franklin) was my favorite. I always enjoyed an episode that had him in it a lot. I also enjoyed seeing him again on Tremors the series. This world will be lost without him in it. He will always be in my heart and I will always remember the time I got to meet him as himself. My prayers and thoughts to his family.

Although I was not fortunate to meet Richard in person, I feel like I knew him from watching old Days of Our Lives tapes, and other videos of personal appearances that he was in.
He always had a beautiful smile, and a friendly attitude with everyone. All of these well wishes are a testament to the type of person that he was. We should all feel blessed that Richard has touched our lives in one way or another.
May the good Lord watch over Richard in his eternal life, and may he always watch and protect his family on Earth.

I met Rick when our families were stationed in Minot, ND. I remember we would all go to the Base Disco on Sunday afternoon and dance for hours. He was so good-looking with his beautiful smile. His happiness was infectious. But what was even better was the person on the inside, he made an impression on me that never left. Such a warm soul. I feel so fortunate he touched my life. I know you can relate. I remember when he went off to college he said he wanted to become a Doctor. He would write me letters during his Spanish class telling me about all his adventures. He mentioned he wanted to try out for small acting bits. It wasn’t long before his career took off and it tickled me he became a “doctor” on Days of our Lives.. (and the rest is history). I got in touch with him a couple of times over the years and saw him about 3 years ago when I was doing some work in CA. I couldn’t believe how accommodating he was about getting together - and I was taken back how he remained so grounded. I quickly remembered why I thought he was so wonderful. I met his wife and first born son - all of them had a genuinely beautiful presence. Seriously, there aren’t many people you meet in you life time like Rick Biggs. I can only strive to be the person he showed me we have the potential to be. I am so saddened by this loss - but his Spirit will be eternal. My heart goes out to his family and all of you for sharing in the loss...

I was stunned to hear of Richard's passing. He was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word. I knew him as a fellow actor on the Sci/ Fi convention circuit, and was always glad to see him at signing shows. His humor and positive attitude were infectious. Rick was a fine man and a great actor. I had a wonderful time acting with him and directing him in Babylon 5 and Crusade. I was awed by his talent and looked forward to working with him again someday. In show business, so many people are driven by their egos, but Rick was not like that. He was very sensitve of other people feelings, as the great actors are, and Rick was a great actor. As a person, he had an aura that attracted people to him, and everyone I knew felt a connection to him, even after just meeting him. I believe his memorial service could have gone on for many hours more if it had not ended at nightfall. His family, friends and co-workers could have paid tribute to him all night and never wanted to stop saying how much they loved him. His loss is a great shock, and as painful as it is for me, how much more painful it is for his beloved family. I am so sorry for your loss, and my prayers are with you. Love and blessings to all his family and friends.

I'd just like to say that I was deeply shocked when I heard that Richard had passed away suddenly May 21. I remember how devastated I was when my father died, even though he'd been sick for a long time and it was expected. The death of a loved one is never easy and my heart goes out to you and the children during this sad time.
I enjoyed seeing Richard as Dr. Stephen Franklin in Babylon 5 and Crusade, as well as his guest roles in Tremors and many other shows.
I only met Richard recently, when he attended the Shore Leave convention at Hunt Valley, MD July 12-14, 2002. He was such a great person to meet and so full of life. His death will be felt greatly in sci-fi fandom and we'll all miss him.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and the family during this sad time.

I had the pleasure of meeting Rick in Philadelphia in 1997, and we became fast friends. He so enjoyed meeting people everywhere he went (he told me he disliked doing conventions where he was isolated from all the fans), and was a genuinely wonderful person. He greeted everyone with an enthusiastic hello and smile. He would do anything for anyone, and went out of his way to make people happy. Years ago I was in LA attending a conference at JPL, so Rick thought I'd enjoy a visit to the set of B5 and invited me. I had such a great time! But more than that, I learned how well-liked Rick was among *everyone* in the cast and crew. The vast number of people who can call themselves friends of Rick is only one indication of how much he contributed to society and the number of lives he touched during his much too short stay on this earth.
I was shocked and saddened by the news of his death, and my deepest consolences go out to Lori, RJ, Hunter, and the rest of his family and friends. Rick, we'll all miss your smile, your jokes and pranks, and the way you used to light up every room you entered. Rest in peace my friend.

Richard Biggs was a fine, outstanding actor that gave life and warmth to the characters he played. He had the ability to make the viewer care about the character he was playing. Now he is gone, and he has left us all much too soon. His work on Babylon 5 endures, and it is now available on DVD. Those performances will be a reminder for years to come of just how special he was as an actor. He touched literally millions of people through those performances, and he also touched many others with his kindness when they met him. He will be greatly missed.

I never had the honor of meeting Rick Biggs in person, but he was a weekly visitor to my living room through his powerful performances on Babylon 5. Richard Biggs was one of the kindest actors I've ever met, and I've been meeting them at conventions for almost twenty years. He appeared at the one I am closest to, Shore Leave, twice in recent years, and he was always kind, personable, and highly approachable. Like everyone else, I was shocked when I first heard about the tragedy...so young, so strong, so happy with his wife and sons. It's just another sad reminder of how brief and precious life is. I think that we should all give our loved ones an extra hug today..because you just never know. Richard's family has our deepest regret and support always. We in fandom are all the poorer for his loss, as is everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him. Goodbye, Rick...and thanks for the great times.

I first met Rick about 8 years ago at a convention in Phila, and was
privileged to become his friend. He
was an annual guest at the Rising
Star conventions in VA, and many of
us have wonderful memories of his
appearances there. The charming,
cheerful, alway upbeat and friendly
man we saw on stage is exactly the
real person that Rick was. He was
quite simply, as beautiful inside
as he was on the outside. Perhaps
one way to honor his memory will be
to remember how kind, patient, and
non-judgemental he was with other
people, and apply that lesson to our
own lives. We all grieve for him
as fans and friends, and our hearts
go out to Lori, R.J., Hunter and
Rick's entire family, who have lost
someone so precious and dear to them
Blessings and peace to all of you.

Still in shock over Rick's passing, my memories of having first met him at ConRad in 1994 (I think), then at Visions in Chicago the next year, and many other cons since then are all swirling in my mind. I remember when he introduced Lori as his fiance, then they had RJ, then Hunter. I most recently saw him in NYC in January where he and Jason Carter were hotly, but in a friendly manner, debating politics, etc., during their Q & A. My heart goes out to Lori and the rest of the family. Rick was always generous to the fans with his autographing and time to chat. I am so privileged to have met him.

I didn't know Mr. Biggs except through the roles he's portraited on television (namely Days of Our Live and Babylon 5). Watching him was a joy and I could see that he enjoyed what he did.
I would like to sincerely express my sorrow on his sudden passing . . . My prayers are with Richard Biggs' family and friends . . .
With prayer and hope,
JLS (a fan)

There is less joy on the planet these days with Richard's passing, especially since it has shocked us all so much. But how blessed we have been that he was with us for those 44 years. His smile is branded on our memories forever. In behalf of myself and all
Lakesiders, I send good thoughts and prayers to his entire family.

I first met Rick at Big Bang, in Chicago. I will never forget how he pretty much took charge in a panel he shared with another B5 cast member - Jerry Doyle, maybe Walter Koenig? The venue was noise, and questions couldn't be heard from the audience. The con member who had the cordless microphone was not doing a good job. So, Rick jumped up, grabbed the microphone, and proceeded to literally *run* from person to person, handing them the microphone so they could ask their question. The poor guy looked like he was running a marathon by the time the panel was over. He will be greatly missed, by many, for so many reasons.

I had the priviledge of meeting Richard Biggs at the Marcon34 Convention in Columbus, OH. Other B5 chatters and I had decided to meet there. Richard was a wonderful man, at first impression. I remember shaking his hand, and saying hello as we crossed each other somewhere in the convention area. He didn't mind it at all, and he made me feel quite at ease. That is a very distinct quality that not many people possess. And I am glad I remember that moment as clearly as if it had happened today. I offer to all of Richard Biggs' family my deepest condolences. I shall greatly miss him, but I will remembered him as a really fun person to be around.

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Rick on the very first episode of B5 that I worked - #105, The Believers. That episode dealt with life and the sometimes (often?) unfair ways in which life is ended.... Rick was a perfect gentleman with the children working on the show at all times, was always happy and smiling, eager to help other performers in any way that he possibly could. He was truly devoted to his lovely wife Lori, and when I asked him about her, his face LIT UP the stage!!!!
Rick, we must say goodbye, at least temporarily... but I'm certain that we will meet again someday. I look forward to hugging you again.
Farewell, Old Friend.

Babylon 5 was the type of show that crept up on you. At first it was just another sci-fi show like DS9 but watching subsequent episodes made you realize it was attempting to push the envelope with its dynamic computer graphics. At first the characters seemed secondary to the effects. But slowly characters stood out. Richard Biggs' Dr Franklin was one of them. He had a quiet integrity that contrasted with some of the macho heroics of other characters. Richard Biggs' fine acting made you believe in the character. Not as a mere sci-fi stock character but as a rounded person.
His sudden death is a great loss to his profession and he will be sadly missed. Watching re-runs of Babylon 5 will now be tinged with sadness. My prayers go to his young family.

Mr. Biggs brought all of us the ability to suspend disbelief and better enjoy any show he appeared on. His dignity and upbeat spirit shone through the characters he created with such skill and artistry. We will all miss you.

Richard was a wonderful guest when he came to Roanoke for the Rising Star convention and made all the fans feel very special. We will forever miss him both at conventions and on TV.

I am in shock over Richard's passing and I want to express my deepest sympathies to his wife and children, as well as all of those who were close to him. He could be devilish and charming at the same time. He was truly one of a kind! My prayers are with everyone whose lives he touched, no matter how briefly! May God rest his soul and comfort those he was closest to.

We have lost a great person in losing Richard, way too soon. My heartfelt greatest sympathy goes to his family, who must be so totally shocked. This is the first loss in the Babylon 5 family, and it cuts to the bone. He was a perfect Dr Stephen Franklin. Just right, and I was lucky to have met him 6 times, and it is just so hard to imagine I will not again. He was a great guy, fun, and just a man of integrity, great looks, and well, just the best. This is just so damn tragic. I loved him, and B5 was and is my passion. There are so many things to say, and yet, one is speechless. All I can say, is something that JMS put into the script for Sleeping in Light. To an absent friend, in memory still bright,, and his was a bright, wonderful soul. God bless his spirit, and God help his family at this time. We will miss you Richard, very very much. You were loved.I am sure us B5'ers will be there for your family and I hope to send something good for his childrens memeory book. He is in my heart and all of them are too.

I saw Rick on Days of Our Lives & Babylon 5, but I never met him in person. He seemed to have such humanity in his performances, though. My heart goes out to his family & all the people he worked with in his various TV projects. He will be missed.

Richard Biggs brought such positive happy energy to every convention he attended. Always kind to me and to his fans, making sure he treated everyone with dignity and respect. What an honor to have been in his presence. I too will always be one of his fans.
My blessings to Lori R.J. Hunter & Aunt Shirley

I had the opportunity to meet Rick several times. It was always great to see him and he always was happy to see his fans.
He was one of the first actors I met and he immediately put me at ease. After that each time I saw him it was like seeing an old friend.
I was fortunate enough to see him again in January in New Jersey and he was, as always, a great guest and a great guy.
I was shocked to hear of his passing and will miss him.

Richard Biggs....King of Convention Guests
I got to meet Richard Biggs through an extraordinary lady, Shirley DiDomenico. As a retired teacher I had the pleasure of running a series of media conventions that featured film and TV stars who would help in education programs. “Aunt Shirley” as we called her, told us about Richard and we invited him to a convention we called Rising Star. He attended six and then when we went on to a purer media convention we created, Starz 2000, he joined us for that too.
In all the conventions we ran he was one of our most popular guests and it was at the demand of fans that we kept having him return. Richard's sense of humor and loving attitude toward fans kept people at his autograph table from opening to closing times.
Especially memorable were the celebrity memorabilia auctions that he emceed. They were funny and they raised more money for charity than any thing else we did. He wouldn’t get off the stage until he was guaranteed that enough money was made for scholarships and for the anti abuse program, Victims of Violence No More. He himself made generous contributions of memorabilia from the hit TV series Babylon 5.
Also memorable was the banquets we had each year. One year Richard used me as his guinea pig in demonstrating the difference between soap opera and science fiction fans. I became him and he acted out the roles of each fan which brought down the house. At another banquet Richard led a group of fans and stars in the YMCA dance number which he produced.
Generous, giving, kind, affable, friendly, there are not enough adjectives to describe him. Had there not been a Richard Biggs we would have had to invent him as he made all of our lives better for knowing him. I for one look forward to being reunited with him in Heaven where he may well be auctioning off harps, wings, and halos as a fund raiser. Of course funds won’t be needed in Heaven, but I am sure God will delight in seeing Richard in action as much as we have.
