Shirlee Detwiler Obituary

Shirlee Kaye (Hasman) Detwiler

Lexington VA - Shirlee Kaye (Hashman) Detwiler, 83, of Lexington, VA, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, January 18, 2021 after battling a lengthy illness. She was born on January 27, 1937, in Chauncey, OH, the daughter to the late Charles James Hashman and Louise Marie (Kiefer) Hashman.

Shirlee lived most of her life in her beloved Lancaster, OH. She was a 1955 graduate and four year majorette of Lancaster High School. Later, she attended Bowling Green University and became a member of Chi Omega Sorority. Shirlee's early interests in dental healthcare and office management would be the springboard helping launch her husband's "Dr. Jon" 52 year dental practice. Along the way she volunteered her time to Meals On Wheels and Twig 15's annual art auction to benefit Lancaster Hospital. She was a life long member of First United Methodist Church.

She was a loving homemaker with exemplary cooking skills and enthusiastically passed them on to her children. Although, her proudest achievement was realizing the importance and gravitas of motherhood. Often she quoted Jackie Kennedy: "If you bungle raising your children, I don't think whatever else you do well matters very much."

At 40, she discovered her life long passion for tennis when her boys took up the sport. Tennis brought her immense joy in playing, watching and developing enduring friendships with those she met along the way. Her classy style matched her game.

Shirlee is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Jon Paul Detwiler, DDS; two sons, Douglas and husband, Adam Vanyo of Chelsea, MA and David and wife, Alison Rohas of Lexington, VA ; and two grandchildren, Langdon and Jon Paul "Penn" Detwiler II.

There will be no services at this time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be directed to the Lancaster High School tennis program: 1312 Granville Pike, Lancaster OH 43130.
