Bob Grieser Obituary

October 12, 1946 - January 31, 2017 SAN DIEGO - He barked at seven Presidents, the Queen and the Pope. That was Bob Grieser, world-renown photographer. He worked at the Indianapolis Star, Washington Star, and was chief photographer at the Los Angeles Times/San Diego Edition. He learned he could bark like a German shepherd and his subject would turn to face him. Click. Bob would get his photo. He authored "Chesapeake Bay," a coffee table tome of black and white photos, with a forward by James A. Michener. He worked for sailing magazines worldwide. Robert Henry Grieser, Jr. died from pneumonia and kidney failure. He was 70. A Celebration of Life will be held at Southwestern Yacht Club on March 12 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made In Memory of Bob Grieser to Scripps Mercy (www.scripps.org/giving) and the Maritime Museum of San Diego (sdmaritime.org).

I met Bobby when he and Georgia lived down the street form my sister, Linda, in Annapolis. He was my first photojournalism mentor and took me with him to photograph sailboats, including the Tall Ships arrival in 1976, on the Chesapeake Bay/. Bobby gave me friendship and encouragement that led to a great career including taking some "boat photos" of my own. I will be forever grateful.

Once in awhile, in a single lifetime, one is blessed to meet such a one as Bob Grieser. How does one use mere words to describe a soul that was as endearing as it was unique. As kind as it was adventurous. Filled with humor, talent and derring-do! Thank you for all of our wonderful memories, Bobby. Whether it was bare-boating with you and Georgia in the West Indies, remooring a sailboat together on a stormy, crazy night in Mission Bay or making Kenzie cry as Santa Claus, you will always be a part of us. Give my best to Papa G. and please let him know I miss his antics, especially around the holidays! Love to you, Bobby, always....

Bobby G's love of life filled every room he entered. His passion for the sea, sailing and photography inspired so many of us! He was one-of-a-kind and will be missed dearly.

Bobby was a capable and talented man whose good heart and good humor was evident in everything he said or did. His hoarse and hearty voice was an essential part of his public persona, and his sense of humor was always evident. He also had an eye for beauty, and a profound love for the sea, and both were evident in his nautical photographs.

What a personality, what a man!

He will be greatly missed.

Bobby G saw life more deeply than did most of us ordinary people. Bobby's photography captured and distilled that passion, a gift for his viewers (from world-class ocean races and aerial shots to yacht cruising in Mexico and Chesapeake scenic). I'm blessed that he mentored me a bit when I was just starting to edit The Log during the Americas Cup; he'd drop in after hours to help me pick and crop freelancers' photos: "Get rid of all this blue over blue; focus tight on the action in he middle." Georgia kept him going. We'll never forget. Woof woof.

We had the pleasure of meeting this fine, talented man when Bobby and Georgia lived in Serra Mesa. Every year my Father-in-law received a Christmas letter, which Leo and I treasured long after Jerry Marchand had passed away. It was filled with wonderful pictures and stories and love of the sea.
Dear Georgia we are so very sadden by your loss. I cannot imagine what you are going through. We just want you to know our thoughts and hearts are with you. See you Sunday at Bobby's celebration. God bless,
