Dr. Douglas N. MacInnis

February 24, 1922 - April 26, 2013
Respected and cherished father, step-father, grandfather, uncle, doctor, and mentor, Doug MacInnis passed away April 26 at age 91 in Laguna Beach, California. After a brief final illness, he spent his last days at the home of his youngest child Krista, enjoying her three young boys nearby, and receiving family and friends even to his last day. Doug was born in small-town Wisconsin, moving as a young teen to Van Nuys, CA. Studying at UCLA and taking a medical degree at Boston University, he served as an orthopedic Surgical Army Captain in Korea. There he met Nikki Price, who became his first wife and mother of his first three children: a daughter, Kim, a son, and a second son, Kurt. He pursued a private practice as an orthopedic surgeon in Encino, CA for over forty years, seeing thousands of patients and multiple generations of families.
In 1968 Doug married Lois Johnson who became his second wife and mother of his fourth child, Krista. Living in Tarzana, CA, he became an avid tennis player and golfer. Always close to his extended family, he enjoyed leading family vacations in RVs, hosting the yearly family picnic, staying close to his nieces and nephews as they grew to adults. A strong believer in investing, he encouraged his family to invest and enjoyed income from the stock market and real estate all his professional life. He served the community via his lifelong involvement in Kiwanis International which earned him many friends. He served both as local president and regional Lieutenant Governor. He hosted an annual fund-raiser to help raise money for the Pacific Boys Lodge and was a regular in delivering "Meals on Wheels" to the elderly. He also enjoyed mentoring young children through a youth homework program in Los Angeles and Orange County. In 1981 Doug married again, to Renate Martin. After retiring from the medical profession, he lived independently in Laguna Woods where he enjoyed golf, participation in clubs such as Topic Masters, attending church and being near Krista, her husband Frank, and their children. While his family life brought him his deepest pleasure, Doug was an avid gardener, a medical volunteer in Haiti and Biafra, enjoyed sailing, kites, Chinese art, and the game of horseshoes, saying it had "All the thrill of competition and none of the pain". He also loved to read and retained a wealth of knowledge covering many topics from world history to Hollywood trivia. From the beginning of his life to his final days Doug was an athlete. Whether he was jogging, rowing, playing sports or simply going for a walk, his goal was to exercise every day of his life. Doug is survived by his 4 children, 5 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
