Glenn Gregory Obituary

September 19, 1950 - December 15, 2020

Glenn Gregory passed away peacefully on December 15, 2020 in Bakersfield, California with his family close by, succumbing to complications due to COVID-19. He is survived by his loving and steadfast wife, Corinne Gregory; his two sons, David (Theresa) Hatcher and Christopher Hatcher; and his three nieces, Jayna (Nathan) Gregory, Taryn (Gregory) Gregory, and Kendra Gregory.

Glenn was born on September 19, 1950 in Los Angeles, California. His father George Gregory (deceased 2005) and mother Geraldine "Gerry" Gregory (deceased 2019), both of Russian-Jewish descent, eventually settled in the San Fernando Valley neighborhood of Encino, where they raised Glenn along with his two younger brothers Gordon Gregory and Alex Gregory (both deceased).

Glenn attended Birmingham High School and had early aspirations of becoming an electrical engineer before realizing math was not his strongest suit – he quickly shifted his interests to geology. He went on to earn an undergraduate degree in Geology from UC Santa Barbara, and a master's degree in Geology from CSU Los Angeles. He began his professional career with Chanslor-Western Oil & Development before an 18-year tenure with the Santa Fe Energy Company. Glenn continued his successful career in the private sector as an Independent Petroleum Geologist for 25 years until his passing. He was a published author and a licensed CA Professional Geologist since 1981.

In 1986, while living in Orange County, Glenn met the love of his life, Corinne, whom he affectionately called "Kuckla" (Russian for "baby doll"). Corinne, in turn, lovingly called Glenn "Huggy Bear." They married two years later, after an adventurous courtship, and Glenn became a supportive and caring father to Corinne's two sons, David and Christopher. Family was the bedrock of Glenn's life and he took on the role of husband and father with unwavering dedication. In 1992, the family moved to Bakersfield, California, where Glenn lived for the remainder of his life.

Glenn was a larger-than-life figure in his local hiking community, serving as a hiking leader for the Kern River Valley Hiking Club and Southern Sierra Hiking Club. His friends and fellow hikers often describe him as a gentle giant whose heart was bigger than his stature. Hiking was Glenn's passion and he was always planning his next adventure; his expeditions would take him across the US and Canada. He loved being in nature, stopping to admire wildflowers, and waxing poetic about the geology he observed on each trail. He was not the fastest hiker – it was never a race with Glenn – he was a proud member of what he spiritedly called the Sloth Hiking Team. One would often find Glenn trailing in the back of the group, wearing his trademark Tilley hat, encouraging everyone to keep going, making sure no one was ever left behind.

Glenn will be remembered for his playful spirit, his genuine good nature, his leadership, his generosity, his endless storytelling, and his endearing sense of humor. He will be missed profoundly. A celebration of Glenn's life and a memorial hike will be held at future dates.

Glenn was always a bright light of caring and decency. I danced at his wedding and he gave the toast at mine. He was a true friend every since he road up on his bike at UCSB. My world seems somehow empty now that I can't expect a newsletter about hiking or sailing over the wide world. His dear wife and family are in my thoughts . He was a gentle spirit and will be missed. I only met and hiked with the group once, but remember Glenn vividly. He emanated kindness, and seemed delighted with life. So sorry that I only had that one encounter, but he left an impression.

I spent much time with Glen in the 1990's enjoying his interpretation of the geologic history of in the Sespe Oil Field in Ventura county. He was more than wiling to share his deep knowledge of the intricacies of the
multiple oil prone but low perm geologic formations in the area. He was a passionate, energetic and skilled geologist. I'll miss him.

When I showed up to my first ‘away’ hike meet up with the SSHC several years ago, I was by myself and Glenn welcomed me and helped me find a group to carpool with. He checked up on me during that hike and I’ve remembered him ever since. What a lovely man and I’m so happy to have shared a passion for hiking with him. Rest In Peace and my condolences to his family.

Glenn was a good geology friend, always happy to share his observations, asking questions, and listening intently. We could always count on Glenn to ask the first question at the SJGS monthly meetings. As a Registered Geologist, Glenn was delivered solid results that met his clients needs. On geology field trips, Glenn was a great participant; asking questions and making great observations.

I’ll miss Glenn.

Rest In Peace.

When we moved into Haggin Oaks, Glenn appeared on our front doorstep in his Cat In The Hat hat and in his deep gentle voice said "howdy neighbor". He welcomed us. He organized Neighborhood Watches, telephone #s/addresses, Halloween parties. Never an unkind word came from his mouth. Once he became your friend, he was a forever presence. Our love and respect to Corinne and the boys, and all who have been so lucky to have known him. Good bye friend, rest easy.

Glen and Corrine have been close friends of my wife Carol and me for thirty plus years. We traveled together, visited each other ‘s homes, shared holidays and helped each other when problems arose. Through all these years, Glen invariably exuded good cheer, kindness, empathy, compassion and love, His untimely death left us both devastated. He was a unique personality, and he will live in our hearts throughout the rest of our lives. Rest in peace, Glen

I feel as if a hole has been torn in the fabric of life. Glenn was the kindest, most decent man. I was proud to call him friend for 50 years. My heart goes out to Corinne, the love of his life, the two sons, and the rest of Glenn's family. His smile and humor will be forever missed. With deepest respect, each batch of hiking photos would be signed Glenn and Corinne. The significance of this is just beautiful. He gave his full worth and we are better for it. Ms. Linda Woodard

My deepest condolences to Glenn's family. I was fortunate to sit near Glenn (who I knew in passing from geology society meetings or on hiking trails) for BC's geology in film class last year. He was a lot of fun, and I was so glad to get to know him a little better. He will definitely be missed, and this is all a shock.

Glenn was always a delight when I would run in to him, which was infrequent in more recent years. I loved his deep voice always with a hearty laugh! I had the pleasure of working with Corinne on his Survivor themed birthday party and you could tell he loved every minute of it! He wore his love of Corinne and the boys on his sleeve. I know he shall be deeply missed.

Glenn was the kind of guy you'll always remember, super friendly, welcoming new members to the hiking club with a big ol' bear hug. I had to learn though to never take him seriously. He was always pulling my leg, and I'd fall for it! I will miss him dearly.
