Gray Phillips Obituary

Phillips, Gray (1923-2005)
Gray Phillips, 82, resident of Pacific Palisades, died August 30, 2005, of complications of diabetes and heart disease. He was born February 10, 1923, in Chattanooga, TN, but lived in Southern California since 1958. He served in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II. Gray Phillips taught art at the University of Chattanooga, Vanderbilt University, and California State University, Los Angeles. He was a fine concert-quality pianist, loved opera and other fine arts, and was an inveterate traveler, once going around the world for nearly a year. He supported many charitable causes dealing with nature, wildlife, and justice, poverty, and health issues for mankind. In Tennessee, he leaves behind his sister, Susan Smith; nieces, Helen Pieve and Susan Bass; and nephew, Moore J. Smith III, and their families. In California, he will be missed especially by his "adopted son," Majid Mosavi-Nejad, and old friends such as Dick and Quentin. His ashes will be scattered at sea by the Neptune Society. No services are planned, per his wishes. Any memorials may be sent to Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 1729, Americus, GA 31709-1729.
