Violet Karagozian Obituary

December 8, 1920 - January 1, 2019 Violet Jamgochian Karagozian was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Aram Jamgochian and Arousyag Chivian Jamgochian, both from the town of Malatia in historic Armenia. Violet was a graduate of Roosevelt High School and Chicago Teachers College, where she was elected to Kappa Mu Epsilon (Mathematics) and Mu Beta Phi (Science). In 1943, the family moved to Los Angeles where she earned her M.A. in teaching mathematics at USC. Violet taught mathematics at Woodrow Wilson and Westchester High Schools, serving as department chair at both schools and leading seminars for mathematics teachers in the Los Angeles City School District. She loved her students and taught with enthusiasm for their success. Violet married Albert Karagozian, CPA, in 1955, and they were blessed with two daughters, Ann and Amy. Violet took early retirement from her career in education and became a full time homemaker, serving as devoted wife, mother, and eventually grandmother. Together with her family, Violet was a member of the United Armenian Congregational Church of Hollywood. She served as Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, as a member of the Board of Deacons, as a Chancel Choir member, and as Secretary and Devotional Chair of the UACC Women's Guild. She followed her mother in becoming an active member of the Daughters of Vartan, Los Angeles Chapter. Violet later served as local matron and national (grand) matron of the Daughters of Vartan. Violet was a teacher and a learner. Through the years she enjoyed classes in sewing, knitting, cooking, calligraphy, computer software, painting and poetry. Her most profound studies began in 1985 when she enrolled in the Community Bible Study (CBS) of Santa Monica, serving in the early years as a children's leader, and remaining a committed student of God's Word throughout her life. Violet is survived by her beloved husband Albert; daughters Ann (Ted Sarafian) and Amy; grandchildren Joseph (Celina) Sarafian, Abigail (Tyler) Sarafian-Hiebert and Mary Kavonian. A Celebration of Violet's Life will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 11:30 am at the United Armenian Congregational Church, 3480 Cahuenga Blvd. W, Los Angeles, CA 90068. Donations, in lieu of flowers, in Violet's precious memory may be made to the United Armenian Congregational Church; Daughters of Vartan PCEF; Community Bible Study, Santa Monica; OASIS Poetry Workshop, West Los Angeles; Medical Home Visit Program, UCLA Division of Geriatrics; Armenian Missionary Association of America; or to the American University of Armenia.

Vi and her family bring back wonderful memories. They lived across the street from us. Vi was comforting, helpful and extremely bright.
My girls were the same ages as Ann and Amy and they used to play together for many years.

My heart goes out to Albert, Ann and Amy and know you are in my thoughts and prayers.
