Nancy MUNGER Obituary

MUNGER, Nancy Barry Died peacefully at home surrounded by members of her family on February 6, 2010. She was 86. Nancy was the daughter of Emilie Hevener Barry and David Noble Barry, Jr., and lived in Los Angeles her entire life. She graduated from Marlborough School in 1941, and earned a B.A. in Economics in 1945 from Stanford University, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She leaves her husband of 54 years, businessman and co-philanthropist Charles T. Munger, and eight children of his, hers, and their marriages: Molly Munger; Wm. Harold Borthwick; Wendy Munger; David B. Borthwick; Charles T. Munger, Jr.; Emilie Munger Ogden; Barry A. Munger; and Philip R. Munger. She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren and by her brother, David N. Barry III, his wife Margaret Carr Barry, and their children and grandchildren.
Nancy dedicated herself to serving others throughout her life, and was committed to improving the institutions that she loved best, including both her alma maters. Nancy served as a trustee and board president of Marlborough School; a trustee of Stanford University; a trustee of the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens; an overseer of the Hoover Institution; and a board member of the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles. Her honors include the Gold Spike from Stanford University, being elected a trustee emeritus of the Huntington, having her name written into the Golden Book of Distinguished Service by the YMCA, serving as President of Las Madrinas, receiving the Spirit of Voluntarism Award from the Junior League of Los Angeles, and being named a Woman of the Year by Marlborough School. Nancy and Charlie supported their institutions with transformational gifts, including the Munger Research Center at the Huntington, the Munger Graduate Residence at Stanford University, the Munger Hall at Marlborough School, and the Munger Science Center at Harvard-Westlake School.
Nancy was a person of modesty, with a quiet and unassuming strength and intelligence. She was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, stepmother, and grandmother, and a consummate master of each role she played as her large and complex family evolved. Her favorite days of the year were Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, which she spent surrounded by her children, grandchildren and other family members. Nancy's friendships were for a lifetime; for everyone fortunate enough to know her, Nancy was an advisor, supporter, and confidant without peer, always there in time of need, never asking anything for herself. Nancy loved to paint in watercolors. Her friends and family demanded more original Nancy Mungers for their walls than she could paint, and the arrival of each year's Christmas card, revealing a new painting, was eagerly awaited. She was an avid gardener, a passion she inherited from her father, and she passed many happy hours planting, pruning, and weeding her gardens in Los Angeles and Montecito.
The family is grateful beyond words for the support and care Nancy received in her last months, beginning with the medical staff at the Mayo Clinic and continuing with the excellent care provided by the medical staff and employees of Good Samaritan Hospital, with special thanks to President Andrew Leeka; to Dr. Andrew Fishmann, Dr. Lawrence Brooks, Dr. Sanjay Banerji, Dr. Jorge Minor, Dr. Jeffrey Rosenberg, and nurse Deborah Zaricor. At home, Nancy received constant and wonderful attention from many people, with special thanks to Oscar Gomez, who diligently and cheerfully kept the whole household afloat; to Nancy's beloved and faithful attendant, Magda Cabauatan; to registered nurses par excellence Shenetra Walker, Cheryl Shaw, and Danielle Deruso; to fabulous physical therapist Debbie Lowe and her great associate Connie Carlson; to hard-working CNAs Joseline Quinto, Felisa Nicholas, and Tynisha Ellis; to Nancy's long-time assistant, Phyllis Bell, who worked tirelessly in support of the entire team of helpers and the family; and to loyal and talented Felipe Velazquez, long a mainstay of the household.
The interment will be private. A celebration of Nancy's life for family and friends only will be held on March 2, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at the Huntington Library. In lieu of flowers, donations in Nancy's memory can be made to any of her charities, or to your own favorite charity.

To the Munger family, I really am going to miss her, she was such a joy to be around, you never knew what she would say in a day to make you laugh, and even though she was the one needing to be cared for she always seemed to be more concerned with caring for others, she was the strongest woman, no PERSON, I've known and I'm so thankful to the lord for allowing me the pleasure of knowing and learning from her, I will never forget her or her loving and supportive husband and family. I will never forget how each and every child took turns to be with her EVERYDAY, coming from all over the world, and how her husband was with EVERY night, What a GREAT FAMILY, GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

To the Family and Staff: You have my deepest sympathy. I was Nancy's latest personal trainer recommended to her by the late Cynthia Mitchel. It was always a pleasure to work with Nancy. She was always ready to learn a new concept or technique about her body. I had met with Molly and physical therapist Debbie when Nancy came home from the Mayo Clinic. Even though it was challenging to see Nancy in the wheel chair with a neck brace and arm cast, etc. she still had a warm, loving spirit her eyes. Ready to get better, ready for action. I knew she was in the best of hands and I was thankful.I am sad yet I know she is in a better place. My prayers go to her beloved husband Charlie, family and staff. May Nancy's soul rest in Peace. Amen.
