Miriam Schorr

1930 - 2016

April 12, 1930 - March 21, 2016 Miriam was born in New York City during the Depression, to parents of Russian ancestory, Mollie Goldstein and Jack Hartman. While studying art and elementary education at Hunter College, she met George Dvorkin, a handsome soldier and fellow art lover, on a blind date. They married and had two sons, Murray, born in NYC, where Miriam began her teaching career, and John, born after the family moved to California. After George's untimely death, she settled in Beverly Hills and began teaching for LAUSD. She married Bernard Schorr and became step-mom to Rachel and Genny. Murray and Bernie also died too young and Miriam faced her own ongoing health challenges. She was renowned for her resilience. "People admire me because through all adversity I seem to just pick myself up and move on." Miriam's ultimate joy was the birth of her granddaughter Molly. Weekly visits with Molly were the superlative highlights of her life. Miriam had a passion for life and lived every day to the fullest. She put family first, which included her enormous, loving and loyal network of friends. She adored traveling, visiting museums, hosting parties, playing Scrabble, or immersing herself in LA's wonderful world of movies, art, music, and theatre. Miriam lived with grace, beauty, and invincibility, and died the same way¿on the anniversary of her son Murray's birthday. Her loving memory will forever live on. Miriam is survived by her son, granddaughter, sisters, and many nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly. The family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
