William Rickles Obituary

August 22, 1933 - April 4, 2016 William H. Rickles, MD, MS born in Marshall, Texas on August 22, 1933 to William and Mary Rickles, passed away in Los Angeles, CA. Rick graduated from SMU, went on to do a Master's at Baylor Medical School in Neurophysiology, and received his MD from Harvard Medical School. He spent the next summer as a Grass Fellow at Woods Hole Marine Biological Institute doing research, and then began his internship at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He joined the Air Force as a flight surgeon and wound up at the 6571st Aeromedical Research Primate Laboratory at Holloman Air Force base near Alamogordo, New Mexico. He did his residency in Psychiatry at UCLA and spent 15 years as chief of the clinical Psychophysiology Research Lab at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute. He did his psychoanalytic training at the LA Institute (now NCP). He published papers and taught many courses. His private practice was, as he referred to it, multimodal, from Virtual Reality Immersion Therapy for phobias, neurofeedback for stress related disorders to psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. He was an expert skier, spent years on the Mount Baldy Ski Patrol and then switched to ice skating and ice dancing with his wife, Patti, in the early 90's until the Culver City Ice Arena closed in 2014. He was a talented photographer, played the piano and recorder and loved Renaissance and Baroque music. He was game for anything......as he always said, "All things in moderation, but all things." He was loving, kind, generous, and valued his friendships. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, sons, Ricky and Derek, daughter, Nicolette, and grandchildren, River and Lukas. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 26 from 2pm-4pm at the New Center For Psychoanalysis, 2014 Sawtelle Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90025 In lieu of flowers, please make donations to his favorite charity, Southern Poverty Law Center, Mobile, Alabama.

I have never found anyone who helped me as much as Dr. Rickles. He was able to turn negative thinking around with a single phrase. What a warm and compassionate human being he was. He is sorely missed.

I read Rick’s bio word for word every year on this day, and I am always impressed by it. I’m Rachel (formerly Ronnie) Kimmel from the Long Beach Design Program back in the 90s. (I may have been Rachel Tanney back then)
I hope you are doing well and I think of you both fondly.

I just saw this today and wanted to send my condolences. Rick was truly an accomplished and fascinating individual. I always liked spending time with him, and with you too Patti. I hope you're doing well. It's been a while so I'll remind you, Patti, that I used to be Rachel Tanney from the Cal State Long Beach design program.....way back in the day. I still brag about how you designed the mosaics in the parking garage at the Long Beach Aquarium. I truly hope you are healthy and happy, you deserve it. You can reach me at [email protected] if you want. Be well!

Patricia, Ricky, Derek, Nicolette and all of Rick's family and his many friends,

I am extremely saddened that Rick has passed and sorry that I just found out yesterday.

He has been an important part of my professional life and circle of biofeedback friends for 40 years. I have many great and appreciated memories with him including starting in 1980 at the beginning of BCIA and in the last few years. We shared many wonderful times at biofeedback meetings, in my home, and in many restaurants.

His wisdom and willingness to share it along with his warmth and friendship will always be with me as I know it is with countless others. I will miss him greatly, old friend and colleague.

My wife, Nancy, also shares my sentiments and knew him as a "very kind man".

With deep regrets we send our sincere sympathy
to Rick's family. We were fraternity brothers
of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity at S.M. U. in Dallas and enjoyed many happy timesduring our
days at the fraternity house. It has been over
60 years since we last saw each other but have
lots of fond memories of those days. Would love to hear from Pattie and his children.

I found Dr.Rickles a very positive addition to the ICP study group I was in with him. His remarks and comments were insightful, interesting and extremely helpful. Dr. Rickles presence added a bit of levity and fun. He never, however, lost sight of the importance of our work. He will be missed.
