Franklin Knight Lane III

1924 - 2017

January 30, 1924 - February 22, 2017 Born in Los Angeles in 1924 to Franklin K. Lane Jr. and Catherine McCahill Lane, he was the grandson of Franklin K. Lane, the Secretary of the Interior under President Wilson. To Frank, life was meant to be a party, a celebration, an adventure. He was here to live life to its fullest and for 93 years the handsome, charming, bon vivant did just that. He ran with the bulls in Pamplona, played tennis in the Australian Open, celebrated Carnival in Rio. He went on safari in Africa, attended Wimbledon and watched the races at Ascot. He was present at Ronald Reagan's inauguration; and over the course of his life shook hands with five U.S. Presidents. Frank was full of Irish charm, humor and mischief which made him a great raconteur. His soundtrack was Big Band music. His sport was tennis. His heart was filled by his expansive circle of loyal friends. He never met a stranger or passed up the opportunity to dance with a beautiful woman. After attending Loyola High School in Los Angeles he went to the University of Virginia until WWII interrupted, sending him off to war as an officer in the Navy. He served on various destroyers in both the Atlantic and Pacific. Following the war he returned to UVA for his law degree and went on to specialize in real estate law in Los Angeles. Frank was a longtime resident of Westwood, a member of the Los Angeles Country Club and the Bachelors. He is survived by his nieces, Allison, Adrianne and Andrea Lane; his nephew Patrick Lane; grandnieces and grandnephews; and a wide circle of friends he considered his extended family. Funeral Mass and burial will be on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 11am in the chapel at Holy Cross Mortuary in Culver City. A lunch reception will follow.
