Dr. David Mott Obituary

Dr. David Lowe Mott passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday morning, Oct. 5, 2014, at his home in Las Cruces. He was the second son of the Rev. George and Martha (Lowe) Mott, born in Springfield, Vermont, on April 28, 1925. During World War II, he was a warrant officer and played trombone with the U.S. Army Band in Washington, D.C. It was there he met Lula Kathryn Titsworth (known as Kathy to her friends) at a church dance held in the basement of a building just a few blocks from the White House. She became his loving wife on Nov. 9, 1945, and they remained together for 66 years. They eventually moved to Fort Bliss, Texas, so that David could participate in a new field the Army was starting, rockets. Later his interests turned to physics. Dr. Mott went to college at TWC in El Paso, then moved to Las Cruces in 1960 to earn a master's degree and a doctorate in physics. Dr. Mott stayed at NMSU, working for PSL and teaching in the Physics Department. After retirement, David and Kathy moved to Ruidoso to enjoy the serenity of a cabin near a creek in a remote location for 15 years. Then they relocated back to the family home in Las Cruces and on March 22, 2011, Kathy passed on from complications after a stroke. David can now be with her again.

Dr. Mott and Kathryn are survived by their three children, John Mott, Susan Cooper, and Paul Mott; three grandchildren, Jamie Valenzuela, Jason Cooper and James Mott; and two great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Isaac Valenzuela.

At Dr. Mott's request, cremation will take place and no ceremonies or burial are planned at this time. Condolences may be addressed to John, Susan and Paul at 2315 El Paseo Road, Las Cruces, NM 88001. Entrusted to Baca's Funeral Chapels of Las Cruces and Sunset Crematory. 527-2222. Dear Paul, Susan, John, and James: What a lovely way to remember your mom and dad last saturday was. Tearful and heartbreaking, but lovely and beautiful at the same time. A wonderful send off to a wonderful couple, who were supportive and giving parents, in-laws and grand-parents. They really were the salt of the earth...dependable people who were always there for you and ready, willing and able to help. I am so sorry for our collective loss, but I thank you so much for inviting me to share in your personal moment of scattering their ashes in the creek in Ruidoso near the cabin. I know they were looking down on us from Heaven, at the right hand of God and the left of Jesus, and they were ecstatic to see us there in their honor, humbled by our words of love, and gladness filled their hearts to know that their wishes came true: their children are happy. May God bless you all and heal your loss, may David and Kathryn rest in eternal peace and love. Amen

I'm so glad I got to spend time with Kathryn and David. They invited me into the family with open arms. Kathryn was always so friendly and David would like to have his nightly wine and discuss the events of the day. May they both Rest in Peace
