I had the honor, privilege and pleasure to work with John when he served as U.S EPA's Deputy Administrator. He was a wonderful friend and superb mentor. I'll never forget you, John.

We are saddened to hear of Dr John's passing but know that he will always be held in high esteem for his humor, knowledge and time that he gave to others.
As a mentor, poker player, visionary, professor, lover of fun and life John will always be in our hearts.
Our thoughts go out to Isobel and family.

I am so sorry that Dr. Hernandez has left us. I first knew of him when I was a student at NMSU in the 1960s. He was a speaker at a club I belonged to, and I still remember his inspiring speech. He had just returned to New Mexico after earning his doctorate at Harvard. Over the next many years, our paths crossed a few times, and I had a glimpse into his great sense of humor. Most recently, I had the honor of interviewing him twice for research I am doing about mid-century New Mexico politics. He was generous with his time and memories--and he was just plain fun to talk to. We, his community, will miss him.

When Dr Hernandez came home to Las Cruces he wisely said to me New Mexico Democrats are more conservative than Massachusetts Republicans I will miss him just as I miss his sister Jean Dodier.
