I. Stanley Hartman
Lititz
I. Stanley Hartman, 92, of Brethren Village, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on December 12, 2015 at Lancaster General Hospital.
He was born in South Annville Township and was the son of the late Walter W. and Elsie (Wampler) Hartman, who passed away when he was born. He was the husband of Irene (Kurtz) Hartman, who passed away in 2001.
Following his mother's death, Stanley was raised until the age of six by Deacon Simon Bucher and his wife, Sallie of Annville Church of the Brethren and was a graduate of the Annville High School class of 1941.
Stanley was drafted to serve in the U.S. Army and he served throughout North Africa and in the Middle East during and following World War II, working in the Medical and Signal Corps.
In the early 1950's, Stanley and Irene moved to Lititz and Stanley worked in home construction, at Wilbur Chocolate and at Hershey- Leaman Co. He then went on to work at the Lititiz Twin Kiss with Irene, at one point holding three jobs at the same time. Wanting to own their own business, in the mid 1960's Stanley and his wife became co-owners of the Manheim Twin Kiss. In the early 1970's they opened their own business, Stan's Drive-In, also in Manheim, where they enjoyed serving the local community until they retired.
A member of the Lititz Church of the Brethren, he was a kind and gentle man with a playful sense of humor and who believed in turning the other cheek—except when playing pinochle. In later years, many would often say he was "sweet." Stanley found great joy in his family and always wanted them to have a better life than he had as a child.
He is survived by his son, W. David Hartman of Conshohocken; grandchildren, Ann Hartman, wife of Greg Westrich of Glenburn, Maine, Aaron Hartman, husband of Tanya of Alexandria, Pa., Jason Hartman, husband of Nicole of Perkiomenville, Pa., Ian Hartman, Lansdale, Pa. and Katharine Sloss-Hartman, Cambridge, Mass.; great- grandchildren, Makenna, Mazzy, Henry, Emma, Alex and Max; and a sister, Alma K. Espenshade. In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by a son, Donald T. "Terry" Hartman; and seven siblings.
Family and friends are invited on Saturday, December 19 to the Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz, for a visitation with the family from 10 to 11 a.m. and a Memorial Service at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Stephen R. Hess officiating. Burial will be in Heidleberg Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Myerstown.
Stanley's family requests that donations in his memory be made to the Donald T. Hartman Scholarship Fund, c/o Director of Development, Penn State DuBois, 1 College Place, DuBois, PA 15801-3199. Or you may call Penn State DuBois at: (814) 372-3038.
