Robert Ooghe Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from May 3 to May 5, 2013.
Robert Barksdale Ooghe, M.D. Robert Barksdale Ooghe, M.D., 85, died at home, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, April 30, 2013. Born in Richmond, Virginia, in 1927, he was the son of Frances Evans Barksdale and Arthur Edward Ooghe, and was predeceased by his younger brother, Arthur Edward Ooghe Jr. He is survived by his wife June; and children, Robert Barksdale Ooghe Jr., Lydia Adelaide Ooghe, Virginia Barritt Thornton, and Robin Barksdale McDougall; and grandchild, Joshua Christian McDougall. Dr. Ooghe studied pre-medicine at the University of Richmond and was graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1949. He then served a tour of duty in the Mediterranean and saw combat in the Korean War. He subsequently entered medical school at the University of Virginia, and was graduated in 1957. Following four years of post graduate work and three years of medical residency, he opened his private practice in 1961, retiring in 2012, after enjoying 51 years of dedicated care to his patients. Throughout his life, Dr. Ooghe nurtured a deep love of classical music, particularly Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms, and Bach. He played his piano daily and composed several works of his own. Inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery, in a private family ceremony as was his wish. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Charlottesville Albemarle Rescue Squad, Greene County Animal Shelter (which provided him with his beloved dog, Sophie), or a charity of your choice. He especially wanted to thank Rachel Caul, Linda Paschall and James Wright for their decades of friendship and exemplary service in his office.

Dr. Ooghe was my doctor and my husband´s for many, many years. I remember him fondly as he always saw us right away when we were ill. I´ll never find a doctor like Dr. Ooghe. He was kind and an excellent doctor. I think of him and his staff often. Sandi & Phil Dulaney

Dr Ooghe was by far the best doctor I ever had. He always took time to interview you each year at physical time to see what was going on in your life. Above all,a superb diagnostician.

There was no other doctor on the planet quite like Dr. Ooghe!

My Mom and most of her family depended on his care for over 50 years. He even made house calls and would serenade my Mom with his own piano compositions - "no extra charge".

My Mom had incredible faith in him and he was her loyal devoted doctor until his retirement.

I am sorry for the family's loss and for the world's... what a guy!
