Alan Thompson, 95, formerly of Fitzwilliam, NH and Old Greenwich, CT died Monday August 18, 2003 at Friendship Manor in New Ipswich, NH.

Mr. Thompson was born in South Shields, England on June 9, 1908, son of Joshua and Eliza (Robson) Thompson. He was raised in Sharon, PA and after graduation from Sharon High School he studied at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Tech.

In 1941 he was awarded a grant from the Works Progress Administration (WPA) to paint a mural in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill Post Office. Upon completion of this mural, which is still in place, Mr. Thompson enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the South Pacific Theater. Following discharge from the army he married the late Margaret (White) Thompson and moved to New York City, where he became a creative art supervisor at Young & Rubicam. From 1950 to 1984 he resided in Old Greenwich, CT and was active in the Old Greenwich Art Society. After his retirement in 1969 he taught watercolor and oil painting in Greenwich, Connecticut and exhibited his work in local galleries and shows. In 1984 he moved his studio to Fitzwilliam, NH where he continued his teaching and painting. Many of his paintings are in private hands and museum and school collections.

Since 1996 he had resided at Friendship Manor in New Ipswich, NH where, despite diminishing vision, he continued painting. He is survived by his daughter, Cathie Talbert, of Fitzwilliam, and two grandsons, Gregory and Joshua Talbert. His brother, Dr. Eric Thompson, also of Fitzwilliam, died in 1997.

No calling hours are scheduled, a family service will be held at the Columbarium at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Riverside, CT.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fitzwilliam Town Library, 11 Templeton Turnpike, Fitzwilliam, NH 03477.

While Alan was a commercial artist with Y&R, he often came into the Perrot Memorial Library in Old Greenwich as he and his wife were avid readers. Often, he had interesting questions for me to research. and I was always able to find a picture of what he was looking for, including the roots of a particular plant.
