Alas, the mentors of my youth: Al Jaffee, Frank Jacobs, Don Martin, Mort Drucker to name a few have sadly passed on. I thank you for making me the Wisenheimer I became, to the amusement of myself and often the annoyance of others. Thanks Guys, for raising me right.

RIP, Mr. Jaffe. If I had never discovered MAD in 1970 at age 10, I’m sure laughter would have been a fleeting occurrence throughout the entirety of my remaining life. I revered you, Mr. Gaines and Don Martin as the greatest comedy trio since the Three Stooges. I shall always remember your fold-ins that graced the rear covers of MAD; the magazine would have been the poorer without them.

BH - Al Jaffee was a close personal friend. He began working for The Moshiach Times, the Lubavitch magazine for Jewish children, in 1984, and was a beloved featured artist and creator of The Shpy, a character which fascinated and delighted hundreds of thousands of Jewish children over the years until he retired from working because of his tremor. He often spoke about how much he enjoyed illustrating The Shpy, especially because he felt it put him back in touch with his Jewish roots and his earliest years growing up in Lithuania.
