Andy Powers Obituary

Andy E. Powers, 73 SAN MARCOS -- Andy Powers, of San Marcos, beloved father and husband, passed away on May 4th of a stroke at Palomar Hospital. He was 73 years old. Andy was born in Sardis, Tenn., on November 14, 1938 to Mary and Auburn Powers. He was the youngest of three boys. Andy married Melanie Putnam in 1964 in Fresno, and they raised their three children while residing in various parts of California; primarily raising their family in the San Francisco area. Andy received his BA at Fresno State in mechanical engineering in 1965, and his masters in hydraulics at the University of Iowa in 1971. He had a long and successful career, working at Bechtel, Pacific Gas and Electric, and most recently Black and Veatch and Washington Group. He was very interested in promoting environmentally responsible hydro projects, such as protecting salmon for a dam in WA state. Andy was greatly influenced by his two years of volunteering with the Peace Corps, from 1962-64 in Sarawak, Malaysia. His love of travel and various hydro projects took him all over the country and to destinations all over the globe, including a return to Malaysia in 1990. Andy and Melanie retired to Lake San Marcos in 2004, and were actively involved in the community with Rotary, woodworking class at Palomar, and enjoyed attending men's church breakfasts at Vista Methodist Church and Lake San Marcos Community Church. He had many interests and hobbies, was well read, was a spiritual and compassionate man, and possessed a wonderful sense of humor. He is survived by his wife, Melanie; his three daughters, Audrey, Sarah and Elizabeth Powers; and his older brother, Sherode Powers. Andy had extended family in both Northern and Southern California, as well as back in his childhood state in Tennessee, and many friends from around the world. He will be sorely missed. Services will be held on Sunday, June 3rd at 3 p.m., at Meadlowlark Community Church at 1918 Redwing St, San Marcos, CA. Sign the Guest Book online obits.nctimes.com
