Bessie Powers

The heart of our family and our guiding light, Bessie Powers has passed away at 99 years old. Formed by her early years as a proud resident of Halsted Street in Greek town, Bessie was born September 30, 1926, the fifth child of parents Marygo (Argianis) and Nicholas. She worked hard and supported her family, spending 41 years at Sears Roebuck before her retirement. Her life was guided by her Greek Orthodox faith, and she was dedicated to her church of 99 years, Holy Trinity. Last but not least, she was one of the greatest Chicago Cubs fans of all time.

Bessie unconditionally loved and cared for everyone she met. She sacrificed her own path to care for family members and found her purpose and happiness in providing that care. She deeply loved her siblings and their spouses, all who have passed on before her: Catherine (George) Sergiadis, John, Jennie (Douglas) Boles, Georgia (Louis) Kokinis and George (Lucille). She dearly loved her cousins the late Aikaterini (the late Costandinos) Papas, and John Argianis.

She was always, always there to love and support her nephews and nieces George (Susan) Boles, Diane, (Kent) Strauss, Bettina (Samir) Hanna, Nick Powers, Bill (Lisa) Powers as well as Goddaughter Dina Boufis and "nephew" Christopher Papas. She was a loving and faith-filled Yiayia and Nana for the next generation: Savvianna and Sophia Boles; Louisa and Solomon Strauss; Ashley Edwards, Emily (Kyle) Rhodes; Lucas and Marcus Hanna; Yianni, Costandino and Katerina Boufis; and honorary granddaughter Vanessa (Stephan) Schingten. She was loved by all who knew her for her kindness, positivity and faith in God, and she leaves us with a rich legacy of love and caring for us to continue.

Visitation Monday February 16 at 9:30 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 10050 Ivanhoe Avenue, Schiller Park, with funeral service to follow at 10:30. Interment at Elmwood Cemetery. Memorials to Holy Trinity Church appreciated.
