Michael Powers Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory - Downtown Suffolk on Feb. 10, 2026.
On February 9, 2026, Michael John Powers Sr. passed away peacefully at his country home in Wakefield, Virginia. He was surrounded by his wife, Marsha Powers; his son, Michael Jr. (daughter-in-law Heather Powers); his daughter, Heather Powers; and grandchildren Mackenzie and Aidan.

Mike was born in Franklin, Virginia, on December 1, 1951, to Maurice and Peggy Newsome Powers. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Michigan, where Maurice began his career in Lansing. There, Mike was joined by six siblings. A 1969 graduate of Monsignor John W. O'Rafferty High School, Mike later met Marsha in Lansing in 1971. After enrolling in the police academy, he began a dedicated career in law enforcement. In March 1974, Mike and Marsha started their family with the birth of their first child, Kevin Michael. Their daughter, Heather, followed two years later. With the birth of Michael Jr. two years after that, their trio of children was complete.

After all their children grew up and were living on their own, Mike and Marsha moved to Swartz Creek Michigan. During the time living in Swartz Creek, many friends were made along with memories. Kevin and his wife Jennifer along with daughters, Maddy and Kaleigh also enjoyed spending time together with Grandma and Grandpa.

In September of 2021, Mike, Marsha and Daughter Heather moved to Virginia. Mike wanted to pick up his southern roots. This is where Mike and Marsha fell in love with a home nestled in Southampton County. Mike and Marsha became members of Woodland United Methodist Church, located in Orbit, Virginia. This is where Mike met his mentor on how to become a beekeeper. Together Mike and Marsha became keepers and harvested their first batch of honey. Along with the bees as a hobby, Mike had a barn built and started his woodshop. Mike enjoyed making pens and turning bowls on his lathe.

Mike is survived by his wife, children and, grandchildren, along with one brother and three sisters. He was predeceased by his father, mother, and one sister.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Woodland United Methodist Church, located at 20051 Orbit Road, Windsor, VA 23487. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends for a reception and fellowship following the burial.
