Wayne Franklin Matney

Wayne Franklin Matney, 83, passed away February 6, 2026 at his home in Ivor, Virginia surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 12, 1942, in Oakwood, VA to the late Frank Matney and Beulah Colley Matney, Wayne was a cowboy at heart long before he even sat behind the wheel of a semi. He spent his childhood in the Appalachian Mountains of Buchanan County, Virginia. This life is where he developed the stamina, grit and hardworking hands that would define his life.

After years behind the wheel of a semi, he became a self-employed hard working owner of a roofing and hauling business. When he wasn't working, he enjoyed his love of deer hounds and horses. He enjoyed almost 30 years of elk hunting in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado with his dear friend Bob Ballinger and many friends that became family in Colorado.

He is predeceased by his wife of almost 32 years, Cheri Snyder Matney, a sister Patty Jean Horne, daughters Kim Ashley and Charlotte Annabell Matney, and his grandson Wyatt Heath-Matney.

Left to cherish his memory are his son Roylee Fish (Susan), daughters Summer Lee, Wendy Blythe, and Noell Heath-Matney (Shawn). A brother-in law, Kenneth Horne and a very special friend, Carolyn Moncus.

His Grandchildren, Bryan Lee (Allison), Phillip Lee (Kristan), Nathan O'Berry (Christina), Justin Ashley (Alexandria), Patrick Blythe (Amanda), Texie Sackett (Cory) and Annabell Heath-Matney.

His great-grandchildren, Nolan & Miles Lee, Robbie & Makenzie Lee, Brecken & Laine O'Berry, Vada & Luna Ashley, Maddie Brown & Emerson Blythe, Mila & Scarlett Sackett.

His many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews that will surely miss him. His many friends and hunting companions, that have become family through the years. He has been a great father, father figure, and best friend to all.

A funeral service will be held Friday February 13, 2026 at 7:00pm at R.W. Baker & Co Funeral Home and Crematory Wakefield Chapel (11414 Gen. Mahone Hwy, Wakefield, VA) with visitation one hour prior. A graveside service will be held Saturday February 14, 2026 at 11:00am at Tucker Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery (37527 Seacock Chapel Rd, Zuni, VA). Memorial contributions may be made in the form of a check made out to Burdette Baptist Church C/O Joseph Poe and mailed to 14151 Tucker Swamp Road, Zuni, VA 23888.
