George Cleveland Powell

George Cleveland Powell III, of Waverly, Virginia, and formerly of Ivor, Virginia, passed away on March 12, 2026. Born on December 26, 1940, George grew up in the close-knit community of Ivor before making his longtime home in Waverly, where he became a familiar presence to all who knew him.

George was a long-term employee of Prince George Electric, where he was known for his dedication and steady work ethic. A lover of all types of music, he found joy in performing for others and sharing the songs that brought him happiness. He was proud of his 68 Plymouth and enjoyed showing it off. He truly never met a stranger - he had a gift for making small talk with anyone and making them feel welcome. He also enjoyed the simple pleasure of a good meal, especially at two of his favorite local spots, The Virginia Diner and the 460 Café, where he shared countless conversations and memories.

George is survived by his sons, Ricky (Miriam) Powell and Michael (Miranda) Powell, as well as his stepdaughter, Cheryl Simmers. He is also survived by his sister, Jenny (Russell) Britt. He leaves behind grandchildren - Lillie (Kaleb) Atkins, Nick (Haylee Turner) Powell, Davis (Jamie) Powell, and Dacey Powell - along with greatgrandchildren Easton, Emerie, and Elsie Atkins.

George was predeceased by his beloved wife, Donna Simmers Powell; his sister, Ruth (Billy) Saunders; and his parents, George and Christelle Powell. He carried their memory with him throughout his life.

A graveside service honoring George's life will be held on Tuesday, the 17th, at 11:00 AM at Ivor Cemetery. In lieu of flowers and in honor of George's love of playing ball himself, the family invites donations to Wakefield Baseball.

George will be remembered for his ability to make friends wherever he went and for the joy he found in sharing meals, music, and moments with others. His presence will be missed by all who knew him.
