I am sending heartfelt condolence to Stuart´s wonderful family. I had the privilege of dancing in his work "After the Teacups" at NYU. He took me shopping for costumes to try out. Years later as a guest with Anna Sokolow he threw himself down to a sitting position with the ease of a ten year old. Thank you for the humor, wisdom, and great inspiration to all dancers that age should not be a barrier to a performer. We all love your integrity and having your say. Hodes was generous with his time, expertise and talent. More than this, he was a gentleman of the old school. His last book on working with Martha is an invaluable contribution to our understanding of Martha and the evolution of contemporary dance - not to mention a well written and funny read! He was by my calculation the last person to have danced with Martha in any meaningful way. His generosity and talent be greatly missed.

Stuart Hodes loved dancing and admired those in the craft. He helped younger, aspiring professionals like myself with helpful advice and supportive actions. I remember that he said there was never a dance work he didn't like because he knew how hard it was to create and perform the art form. I always remembered that when I found myself being too critical.

I worked with his wife Liz on acting, and he was always around to help whenever he could. We became friends as well and he helped my life improve so much. He was a devoted husband and father, and I will greatly miss his presence.

STUART HODESThe dance world lost a great elder yesterday, and I lost a dear friend. I was blessed to know him as a teacher, mentor, dance partner (!), and friend. May our conversations live on in my heart and mind for the rest of my lifetime. A legendary dancer and partner to Martha Graham @marthagrahamdance he lit up concert stages, Broadway stages, and film. But his advocacy and support in the dance world extended far beyond the stage in fields of education, research, and publication. When you watch videos of Stuart dancing you can see why he leapt from WWII fighter pilot to dancer—he soars with humanity and ease in every step. His intellectual curiosity and desire to learn inspired me in so many ways. Our friendship and his mentorship continued long after my years at Graham as he was a spirited supporter of my dissertation research (he even read my dissertation and met me for lunch with a manuscript full of his hand written notes) and my work as an artist in academia. His joy for other people’s happiness and success was genuine and divine. For years, whenever I thought of how I’d like to age I always thought of Stuart dancing and performing and publishing into his 90s. May we all be so lucky to have someone near with the special kind of unending curiosity and generosity like that which sparked every moment spent with Stuart. He signed a manuscript of his early text about life as a dancer with Martha Graham with the follow, “Dear Jennifer, Just skip the boring parts. Love, Stuart"

Stuart was the most infectiously positive person I ever met. i worked with him (I was in the fiscal department then) at the New York State Council on the Arts in the early 70’s. He was a total delight and very bright (no disparaging comments about dancers, please). He had a great, long life and I send my deepest condolences to his family. But what wonderful memories you all must have!!

I loved listening to Stu's many stories about WW1 and his dancing career. I wrote and directed a musical revue called "The O'Toole's Tonight" for Liz and Stu that was produced at East Lynne Theater Company in Cape May in 2000 and 2001. My life was richer for having known Stu, and I will miss him.
