Eli Wallach Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 25, 2014.
NEW YORK (AP) - Eli Wallach, the raspy-voiced character actor who starred in dozens of movies and Broadway plays over a remarkable and enduring career and earned film immortality as a conniving, quick-on-the-draw bandit in the classic Western "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly," has died. He was 98.

The actor's son, Peter Wallach, confirmed Wednesday that his father passed away Tuesday evening in New York from natural causes.

"The best way to honor him is to put on one of his movies," he said. "Put on 'Baby Doll' or 'Magnificent Seven.' Those live forever."

Wallach and his wife, Anne Jackson, were a formidable duo on the stage, appearing in several plays dating back to the 1940s. He won a Tony Award for his supporting role in Tennessee Williams' "The Rose Tattoo" in 1951, was an original member of the Actors Studio, and was still starring in films well into his 90s.

But Wallach may be best remembered for his role as Tuco in "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." In the Sergio Leone spaghetti Western, Clint Eastwood (The Good), Lee Van Cleef (The Bad) and Wallach (The Ugly) attempt to outwit and out shoot each other in pursuit of a trove of gold coins buried in a Civil War cemetery.

Wallach played a menacing, yet lovable, outlaw who had committed every crime in the book: "murder, armed robbery ... inciting prostitution, kidnapping, extortion ... rape" as the executioner intoned in one famous scene before Tuco escaped a hanging.

The movie - with a haunting score by Ennio Morricone - was the third film in a trilogy that included "Fistful of Dollars" and "For a Few Dollars More," and influenced a generation of filmmakers. Wallach's character had several memorable lines, including, "When you have to shoot, shoot, don't talk," after being confronted by a rival gunslinger.

"Everywhere I go, someone will recognize me from 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' and start whistling the theme song," he said in a 2003 interview. "I can feel when it's going to happen. I smile and wave, and they wave back."

Wallach also starred in the steamy "Baby Doll" (1956), "The Magnificent Seven" (1960), "The Misfits" (1961), an Arthur Miller-written film that starred Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable, "Lord Jim" (1964) with Peter O'Toole and "The Godfather III" (1990), in which he played a murderous mobster who dies after eating poisoned cannoli.

He and Jackson starred in a series of plays, including George Bernard Shaw's "Major Barbara" in 1956 and a hugely successful run of "Luv" in the mid-1960s. A critic once hailed them as "the proletarian Lunts," a reference to Alfred Lunt and his wife, Lynn Fontanne, who at the time were the most famous couple in the American theater.

"Although I limp in life as a result of my two hip operations, whenever I go onstage with Anne, the lights give my body a lift and I prance onto the stage and dance off," Wallach said in "The Good, the Bad, and Me," his 2003 memoir. "I feel I can play a 16-year-old if the author calls for that. Which is why I prefer live acting to film - I come alive with the lights."

Wallach was born in Brooklyn on Dec. 7, 1915, the son of an immigrant candy store owner. He dabbled in dramatics in high school, while becoming a table-tennis champion.

His brother and two sisters had become teachers, and other family members were doctors and lawyers. Wallach, who had appeared in plays as far back as grade school, elected to study acting.

Acting definitely did not run in his family, Wallach once said, "Being an actor to them is like joining the Foreign Legion."

His drama training was interrupted by World War II service in the Army medical corps, in which he earned the rank of captain. From 1945 to 1948, he appeared in several Broadway plays but had to work as a swimming instructor and camp counselor to make ends meet.

His stage career eventually took off, thanks in large p art to his success in Tennessee Williams productions. He appeared in "The Rose Tattoo," then "Camino Real" and later had a long run in "Teahouse of the August Moon."

His debut film, directed by Elia Kazan, was "Baby Doll," based on the Williams' play. It was condemned by the Catholic Legion of Decency for what was termed its "carnal suggestiveness."

He became a charter member of the Actors Studio, along with up-and-coming performers such as Marlon Brando, Karl Malden and Jackson. He was one of the nation's early students of Method acting, where actors draw upon their own memories and emotions to replicate the emotional conditions under which the character operates.

After "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly," his relationship with Leone soured. Leone had promised him a role in the Western "Duck, You Sucker," but the studio wanted Rod Steiger. Wallach had already canceled another project to take on the role in "Duck, You Sucker," and was angered by losing the par t.

Wallach did not slow down in his later years. He played a store owner in 2003's "Mystic River," directed by Eastwood, and had a part in the romantic comedy "The Holiday" in 2006. In 2010, he was featured as an old financial hand in Oliver Stone's "Money Never Sleeps," the sequel to "Wall Street."

Wallach met Jackson while they were appearing off-Broadway in Williams' "This Property Is Condemned." They married in 1948 and had three children, Peter, who became a film animator, and two daughters, Roberta and Katherine, both of whom followed their parents into acting.

Even almost 11 years have gone by since Eli Wallach passed, I would like to write some lines...
Unfortunately I was born in the wrong time and place, so I never had the chance to see him live onstage or to meet him to tell him what a great actor he was. Magnificent and superb method actor, he could do anything he wanted. I first knew about him when I was Just a little 8-9 year old italian girl who, during her long summer holidays in the late '80s early '90s used to watch The good, the bad and the ugly literally every single day on her tape recorder. I immediately fell in love with Tuco and his complexity, his depth, his resilience...he became my favourite carachter in my favourite movie played my all time favourite actor. I love every carachter he impersonated, too bad for me I couldn't see his work in theatre, that Is something I really will regret forever!
He still is and always will be my all time favourite actor ever, no one can even come close. I love his rough voice and his elegant charm. I will always remember him and keep him in my heart and I'm sure when my time will come the last thing I will see will be Tuco running in Sad Hill cemetery looking for Arch Stanton grave, while the amazing Exstacy of Gold will be playing.
Thank you Eli for everything.

Eli wallach, Tuco, was ,and still is, my all time favourite actor. His role as the ugly captivate me as a child and still colour my imagination as an adult today. I probably watch the movie twice a year.
Never met the men but if rumours are half true he was a great human being.
I am sad that he left us and I will light a candle every June 24th.
Rest in peace Tuco and remember:"there are two kind of people in the world my friend us.....and you !"

Contrast his roles in "Magnificent Seven" and "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" with "How to Steal a Million" -- he was so brilliant. But my favorite memory of him is an appearance on "The Tonight Show" about... I think 1969-1970. He talked about how excited his children were when it looked as though Calvera had won on "M7," and how bad he felt for them... though with humor, of course... when it turns out to have been a false victory. My favorite moment, though, was when he recited a little poem that has been close to my heart ever since. I can't remember if he said he wrote it or not, but I love it! "A friend is not a fellow who is taken in by sham. A friend's a guy who knows your faults and doesn't give a damn!" Blessings on you and your family, Mr. Wallach. You are missed.

Eli was the clue to keep the movie interesting and my favorite roll was Tuco in the The Good Bad and Ugly which if i had some influence he would have gotten and award for his outstanding performance and without him Clint and Lee Van Cleef would have taken second place. I am posting this on behalf of and in honor of my Father. Eli Wallach was my Father's Commanding Officer in the Army. My Dad always said, before Eli would give them hell for something or prepare them for something difficult, he would always tell a joke to lighten the mood. My father respected Mr. Wallach and was Best Man at his wedding. They reconnected when Eli was in downtown Philadelphia, PA doing a play. I am proud to have pictures and paperwork that my Dad saved and a picture of my Dad and Eli together during the War as well as pictures of Eli in and with an Army tank. RIP Mr. Wallach and reconnect with my Dad in Heaven. You two are way overdue for a one-on-one chat. You have some catching up to do. Blessings on your transition.

a great actor who never disappointed in any performance he did. if you watch him as Tuco he is able to garner sympathy for his character when he is speaking with his brother the priest, even though he is basically a thief, and yet at other times he is tough and has to be taken seriously and also comical at times as well. it takes real talent to do that and sadly we just don't see that in movies anymore. i will watch the Good, the Bad,and the Ugly as a tribute to this great actor this weekend. he is not dead as long as we remember him. my condolences to the family and may he rest in peace.

My deepest condolences to the family and to Mrs. Anne Jackson Wallach. My name is Laurence Powell. My Dad, Bob Powell was stationed in France with Eli during wwII. He was a Medical service Corps Officer also. He was a Captain. He used to tell me about working with him writing a show in France. And just how talented Eli was.My Dad stayed in the hospital field but for 10 years he wrote and produced fund raising shows that would run for 3 nights a year for the hospital auxillary. I somehow feel Mr. Wallach's freindship of Dad in France rubbed on him.On behalf of Robert W. Powell (Bob), Wee wish our best to all of you. Laurence Powell.
