Susan Borman
Susan Borman lived an unselfish, courageous life, fought a long, valiant battle with Alzheimer's and died on Sept. 7, 2021, as always, a committed Christian, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was the very best in every category and we miss her more each day.
Cremation has taken place and Susan will be interred at West Point at a later date.

I am not a friend or even an acquaintance of the family, and yet ...
On the eve of the second anniversary of the passing of Susan Borman, just 10 days after the passing of Marilyn Gerlach Lovell, I want to reflect on the powerful message that the "wives of Apollo 8" could send to future generations, if only our media and education system cared to honor the history of the "Moonshot", along with the sacrifices and emotional hardship endured by the families involved.
Apollo 8 was the most daring mission of the Apollo program: a mission full of "firsts". The wives of the astronauts understood the risks very well. It wasn't easy on them, but they stayed strong for the sake of their families and their country. No need to say more: people here know the story. But I didn't ... until 1993, aged 34. That's when I started buying biographies of the astronauts, just a few months after coming to America. I did not learn this from TV and magazines, and my own "polling" suggests that our school system barely mentions the "Moonshot".
Valerie Anders is the last "wife of Apollo 8" still with us. After the passing of Jim McDivitt (Apollo 9) last year, Apollo 8 is the last Apollo crew left "intact". Perhaps more remarkable in all this, all the "couples of Apollo 8" stayed married, as long as they could, and maybe beyond that.
I believe that is an example that should be mentioned in schools.

The little I know about Susan Borman I know from reading "Carrying the Fire", by Michael Collins, and doing some research after that. What I learned is more than enough for me to feel deep gratitude and respect for her and her family. As an immigrant to the land of the free, deeply inspired by the Apollo program in my childhood, I was saddened to learn about her passing. My condolences to the Borman family.

Col Borman, I would like to share with you and your family my deepest sympathy for your loss. I was also A member of Team Apollo and we are no strangers to grief and heartache and loss. The emotional and personal sacrifices of the thousands of men and women and families who supported the program is silent legacy to future generations. I lost my wife in 2021 as well and understand now that the greatest gift and benefit of our exploration efforts are the personal lessons learned that we must now share to honor the memories of our spouses and children who were our real motivation for success. God Bless our wives and families, the Apollo Team silent majority.

We first met Frank and Susan when Frank returned in early 1969 from his historic flight around the moon. Later we lived near the Bormans in Miami. Susan was a loving, patient and gracious person. Full of Faith in the Lord, Full of a patriotic fervor alongside her husband and a wonderful mother. She fought a very brave fight in recent years with Frank at her side surrounding her with love and prayer. What a legacy they share. The two were inseparable, just as they know they will be in Heaven.
With our Love and Respect.
