OBITUARY

F. Joyce Stringfellow, daughter of the late K.C. and Margaret Ferguson was born on January 18, 1950 in Greenville, SC and God called her home on Saturday, January 8, 2022.

Joyce was raised in Washington, DC and was educated in the DC Public School System. At the age of 16, she married Thomas Stringfellow and had two daughters. The family union was short lived so, as a single mom, she began working to support her children.

When she decided to re-dedicate her life to Christ, God used Joyce as a modern-day miracle. Those who knew her during her hay days personally witnessed the transformation into the living testimony that God wanted to share with the world. God picked Joyce up, spun her around, and placed her feet on solid ground.

She got baptized at Faith United Ministry in 1993 and began studying The Bible. She was also committed to a 21-day fast during Consecration every year since then. Years later, she became a member at Zion Church. The new Joyce LOVED HER HEAVENLY FATHER. Early each morning, she would commune and study His word. On Sundays, she would make sure she got to church early so she could get a good seat. During praise and worship and the preaching of the word, she was not ashamed to show God how much she loved him and had no problem with clapping her hands and jumping to her feet. She couldn’t hold a tune but she tried anyway. She was not only a hearer of the word but a doer. Her act of service in church was as a greeter and she really enjoyed her small group (Women Behind the Mask).

God laid the spirit of accomplishment and conviction on Joyce’s heart. When she was 50 years old and working a comfortable full-time government job, she attended night school and earned her high school diploma to be a role model for her children, grandchildren, and others to know that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. In 2002, after completing her higher educational studies, she graduated and received her Certificate in Theology. That same year, she severed her long-estranged relationship by obtaining a divorce to marry the love of her life, Thomas Armstrong.

A Federal Employee for over 21 years, she was a Financial Program Specialist for the Bureau of Prisons. Joyce’s jovial nature and can-do attitude was infectious as she was routinely recognized for exemplary work and identified to train incoming personnel. She established long lasting relationships and left an indelible mark with many whom she graced with her presence.

Joyce took pride in her appearance. Everything had to match from the clothes to the shoes to the jewelry. She would even wake up extra early to change her nail polish to match her attire. She was a beautiful soul with a big heart. She was quiet but when she spoke, it was with confidence and faith. She loved to prepare food for others and especially enjoyed family functions. Many people will always remember her smile. She loved to laugh, have fun, and hit the dance floor to join any line dance.

Joyce leaves to cherish her two daughters Sharon Stringfellow and Susan McGowan (Terrance Sr); grandkids James, Malik, Simone, Zanobea, and Terrance Jr “TJ”; great grandkids Paris, Egypt, and her newest one Malachi (2 months old) which she nicknamed “Buttons”; and three remaining siblings Melvin Greene, Patricia Baken, and Michael Ferguson. Preceding her in death were her parents K.C. and Margaret Ferguson; her siblings Harold and Kurtis Ferguson; and the love of her life, Thomas Armstrong. She will be missed by nieces, nephews, cousins, co-workers, friends, and her church family.

There are no words adequate enough to express our sympathy for the passing of your mother. Moms hold a special place in our heart so their absence is felt deeply. Although your mom isn't physically here with you, the bond you have will never be broken. As long as we remember our loved ones they will never truly be gone and we'll see them again. We will continue to pray for you and your family during this difficult time. May God continue to give you comfort and strength.

Blessings,

Dear Sharon and Susan, your Mom will truly be missed. Joyce was kind, and well put together--from her hair that was done by you Sharon, clothes, nail polish and jewelry. Joyce had a beautiful smile and a comforting voice that made you feel like you were home. She loved and was devoted to her girls, her grandchildren, her family, and friends and was kind to a stranger. Such a loss, you never get over it but you learn to live with it by the Grace and Mercy of God.
May God give you an abundance of peace, comfort and joy as you think of her. May you remember the best days that you had with her that will make you laugh instead of cry and may you know that she will always be with you. I love you Joyce and will miss you.

Sharon,
My prayers are with you and your family at this time. Praying that the God of all comfort will help you find peace. I know - from my mom's passing in Dec 2019 - the pain of not having them right there with you physically. But they are with you. You will carry memories of her in your heart always and they continue to speak to us and guide us for the rest of our lives.

I still remember the day we met.. My walk through at work! You didn't sugar coat a thing and I absolutely adored you for that. You were a co-worker who became a friend and a friend who became family! We were almost inseparable. Many people told me you they didn't hear you laugh or talk as much at work until I got there You were and will always be a very special person to me. You fed me all the lobster biscuits and seafood salad I wanted while pregnant, lol! We were sisters family that God placed together. I will miss you deeply. I love you Joyce!!

My deepest condolences to the Ferguson and Stringfellow families for the loss of their loved one.

Joyce was a precious soul!! She was genuine, compassionate, caring, and a wonderful person. I had the opportunity to work with her for many years. What I know of her, she was a very sincere and hardworking individual. Before I retired in 2020 September, I asked her once, Joyce, are you not thinking of retiring anytime soon her reply to that was I will be bored if I retire. This makes my day go fast I truly believe, what she said she really meant it. She wanted to keep herself busy with working until her last breath.

You will be missed forever Joyce!!

I pray to God to give courage and strength to the families at this difficult time. Let the precious soul Rest In Peace!!

Dear sweet Joyce, You will be missed so much. What a privilege it was for Chris and I to have known you. You're such a beautiful person, inside and out, your smile, beautiful smile, lit up the whole room. It was very obvious that you were a child of God. Your sweetness and love radiated from you. I'll never forget the time I picked you up at the train station, waiting for you couldn't find you, then you got off the train and I started screaming Mom Mom Mom of course everyone was looking around and I ran to you and hugged you, yes your little pale face blonde daughter, I think I may have embarrassed you but you smiled all the same. When Susan had her back surgery, you were there for her, taking care of her loving her like a wonderful mother would. I told you this once before, but I'll say it again, thank you for giving me Susan, she is one of the best friends neighbors confidants that anyone could ever have. I know she is this way because of you. I know she will miss you desperately I know your family will miss you desperately. I know that I will see you again one day in heaven and it will be such a joy to see your beautiful smiling face. I love you Joyce. Xox Debi

To The Family of Joyce Stringfellow:
I came to really get to know Miss Joyce in the last couple of years. Miss Joyce was a wonderful woman of God. We always talked daily in the office and always made it our duty to speak when we were in the office. She was a blast to talk to. We could talk about anything. We always joked about how she loved to coordinate her outfits. Miss Joyce will truly be missed. Please know that I was blessed by her spirit. My condolences to the family of Miss Joyce. Heaven has truly gained a Great Angel. My prayers are with you and may his peace be with the family.

I decided to used a candle in memory of Joyce as she was the light for a lot of people (myself included) that needed words of encouragement, a prayer or just a smile. Joyce words can’t express how great a person you were. I’ll miss the pasta salad or any food you brought to functions as it was always delicious. You will truly be missed. Love always.

To The Family,

My dearest DC Family, My heart is so heavy and saddened by the untimely passing of such a beautiful, kind, lovely soul our beloved Joyce; my family and I are devasted. I have such fond memories of Joyce during my many summer visits to DC. One of my best memories was of her coming over before she went to work wearing a beautiful shade of yellow from head to toe - yellow pants, yellow top, yellow headband, yellow earrings, etc etc. and dancing. She was always a joy to be around.

May you find comfort during this difficult time knowing that you have the support and love of all those close to you. Praying you find some peace and solace to help you through. I'm here for you.
Love,
Teresa (Dillard) - cousin

To the Ferguson and Stringfellow families,
My deepest condolences to the loss of an amazing woman. I remember when we were working in COBO, she gave me an old children's bible that was used by her grandson, which I still treasure to this day. Another memory I have with her is that whenever she was tired, she would always go barefoot around the office. I've known her since we started in BOP in 2006 and she was always focused and hardworking. Rest in peace in God's kingdom.

My condolences to the family. Joyce and I met at church 17 years ago and we bonded instantly. She was like that big sister I never had. We had so much fun laughing and talking even if we were out of touch for a while. When my Dad passed, who was the first person walking through my door with my favorites...seafood salad and lemon cake. I definitely know that she's dancing all over Heaven now. Rest in Peace my friend. Never forgotten

January 18, 2022

To my family,

It's hard to put into words as Joyce was like my mother, mentor, and friend especially when we were at church. She had a heart of gold and took care of you no matter what was going on. She always had a smile on her face which made you smile. As difficult as this may be for me and family I'm looking at the big picture there's an angel on our side. Love you always. Rest in heaven where you belong.
