Friedman Erhardt Obituary
Erhardt died Friday of heart failure at his home in Upper Black Eddy, about 25 miles east of Allentown, his family said.
Erhardt's jolly personality, thick German accent and wit made him a fixture on TV shows such as "Regis and Kathie Lee" and comedy skits on "Saturday Night Live."
He was also said to be the inspiration for the Swedish chef on "The Muppet Show."
Born in Stuttgart, the son of a newspaper owner, Erhardt earned the nickname "Tell" after playing William Tell in a school play.
He trained in restaurants and hotels throughout Europe.
He made his first appearance on a local Philadelphia TV show "Dialing for Dollars" in 1974. That was followed by a 90-second cooking spot on a nationally syndicated show, which blossomed into appearances on "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," specials for QVC and a PBS program, "In the Kitchen With Chef Tell."
He was also known on the Philadelphia dining scene as the owner of several restaurants in the 1970s and 80s and as a culinary educator, cookbook author and spokesman for major cookware and food product lines.

A giant of a man with a passion for his trade. I remember "Chef Tell's" recipies at laneco. Yearly,he visited our vo-tech school in Limerick Pa. to do a presentation for the culinary arts students. He will be missed!

To all Chef Tell's family and friends: I am so sorry to hear about the Chef. He was my culinary hero! My husband and I used to drive down to the Manor House for dinner from Scranton, PA. Chef Tell would say to us with a smile: "You come all the way down here from Scranton?" I said, "That's because you're THE BEST!" Before I was married, we came there with my uncle and grandfather who also loved to cook. Chef Tell walked us through his pastry shop and kitchen and my grandfather's eyes lit up! He was so much fun. He used to come over to our table and tell us what to order! He told my grandfather to order duck "My Vay!" He was always right! Ellie and Frank Esposito

My father knew Chef Tell through the Masonic Lodge. He always had such wonderful stories about the chef. He especially loved the Chef's Deviled Egg Recipe. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends.
