JOSEPH BARNES

LIMA — Joseph E. Barnes, age 27, passed away May 1, 2016, at 7:18 am, at his residence. Joseph was born November 10, 1988 in Lima, OH, to Mary "Molly" E. (O'Brien) Barnes and Jeffrey E. (Bonnie) Barnes. His mother survives in Lima and his father and stepmother survive in Findlay.

Joseph attended Lima Central Catholic and Apollo. After high school, Joe joined the U.S. Army and was dedicated to serving his country for 8 years. During his time in the military he had served 2 tours in Afghanistan with the 1st Battalion, 506 Infantry Regiment, "Red Currahee". Joe had been stationed at Ft Drum, in New York and Ft. Campbell, in Kentucky. He had attained the rank of Sgt. E-5 Infantryman. Joe was an avid WWE, Cleveland Browns, and Ohio State Buckeye fan. He loved his rescue dog "Buddy" that also rescued him. Most of all, he loved spending time with his son Ben, who was the light of his life.

Joseph is survived by his paternal grandmother, Patricia Barnes of Zanesville, OH, a son, Benjamin Barnes of Lima, OH, 2 sisters; Emily (Alan) Bagdonas of Perrysburg, OH and Kathleen (Andre Spivey) Johnson of Lima, OH, 2 brothers; Sean (Megan) Barnes of Zanesville, OH and Michael (Tisha) Barnes of Zanesville, OH, 11 nieces and nephews, many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a paternal grandfather, Bernard Barnes, maternal grandparents, Joseph and Evelyn O'Brien and cousins, Timothy Graham and Erin P. O'Brien.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at the St. Gerard Catholic Church. Officiating the service will be Fr. Jim Szobonya. Burial of cremated remains will take place privately at a later date at Gethsemani Cemetery. Following the mass there will be military honors provided by the U.S. Army and the VFW # 1275. Friends may call on Friday from 4-8 pm at the CHILES-LAMAN FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL and on Saturday from 9-10 am at the SHAWNEE CHAPEL. Following the visitation on Friday there will be a parish wake service at 8:00pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Condolences may be expressed at chiles-lamanfh.com.

Im sorry for your loss, I knew Barnes and served with him at Fort Campbell. I knew of his struggles, trials and tribulations as well, he was a good man and always talked about his son. I regret not making it to the funeral but I had just returned from the funeral of a buddy I served with in Germany when I found out.
