About Massachusetts

Massachusetts is the home of Plymouth, which was the site of the first colony in America. The state was a center of the move for independence from England. The battles of Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts initiated the Revolutionary War. The night before the battle, Paul Revere made his famous midnight ride to warn patriots that the “British Were Coming.” Today the state is a leader in biotechnology, information technology and venture capital investment. Incredibly, Massachusetts is the home of 121 institutions of higher education. Some of the best known are Harvard, MIT, Boston College, Tufts and Boston University. Basketball was invented by James Naismith in the state and it is also the home of the Basketball Hall of Fame. The iconic Fig Newton cookie was first created in Cambridge and was named for the nearby town of Newton.
