EVELYN SNYDER Obituary

Evelyn Snyder was born to Roy and Ethel James in 1926 in Leslie, Arkansas. After graduating from high school Evelyn moved with her family to California. There she earned her Cosmetology degree and enjoyed the next few years as a successful hair stylist.
She met Don Synder on a blind date and married him in 1948. The newlyweds bought land in north Stockton where they built a home and a huge garden of fruits and vegetables for family, friends and community.
Evelyn had two children Donna and Jim. As her children entered school she started her second passion as a lunch cook at Elkhorn Elementary School. Many people still remember those cinnamon rolls!
Evelyn delighted in summers at Lake Tahoe entertaining family and friends.
Evelyns greatest pleasure was in her two grandchildren, Colby and Bret. She was so proud of their wonderful spouses, Christina and Lauren adding even more love to her family. She enjoyed the events they hosted and reveled in the achievements of her four great grandchildren.
Evelyn moved to Lodi Commons where she appreciated all their activities and making many beloved friends there.
Evelyn died August 23, 2025. She is survived by her brother Lee James, children Donna and Ron Searengin, and Jim Snyder; grandchildren Colby and Christina Swearengin, Bret and Lauren Swearengin; great grandchildren Michael, Jonathan, Addison, and Archer.

Yes, it´s funny how certain things throughout childhood are stamped into your brain while other events are lost. Mrs Snyderis remembered because of her kindness and her incredible meals. We, as elementary students, had no idea how lucky we were to have her as our school cook. In addition to the chili beans and cinnamon rolls, she also made some delicious dinner rolls. Sounds like Mrs. Snyder had a wonderful life. Rest in Peace.

We were sorry to hear about your loss. We have not seen Evelyn in years. I remember going with my mom to her house and she would cut my moms hair. We even believe she was instrumental in encouraging my mom to go to work at Lodi Unified as a cook. My mom was Evelyn's cousin. My mom was Glendola (Glen) Hunger McMillen. My grandmother, Myrtle, and Ethel were sisters.
With deepest Sympathy.

Those of us who went to Elkhorn Elementary School were so lucky to have Mrs. Snyder as our lunch cook for so many years. Yes, she made delicious cinnamon rolls and chili beans plus her green salad. I had my mother find out how she made her baked chicken and it turns out she used mayonnaise before dipping in flour. Her food was so good that even as a child I wanted to know how she made it. She brought us such comfort with our meals. It was also fun when you were in the 8th grade and you could be her assistant with serving the meals. Such good memories. My condolences to the family. Thank you Donna and Jim for sharing your mother with all of us. Carla Sousa

YES! I do remember those incredible cinnamon rolls along with the chili beans. Such a nice woman at Elkhorn School. That was a time when children got wholesome, home-cooked food. Rest in peace with the Lord, Mrs. Snyder. And thank you for the good memories. Marit

I was indeed blessed to be a neighbor of Evelyn and Don! In the 1980's we met at their home for Neighborhood Watch meetings and Evelyn always had some delicious dessert to share with all of us! Don would share his bountiful garden harvest with all of us, as well. In 1995 my husband Greg died and a year or so later Don died. Evelyn & I started walking together in the neighborhood, and continued to walk on Saturday mornings for many, many years, both at O'Connor Woods and The Arbor in Lodi. After walking we have breakfast and catch up on each other's lives. She was a God send to me, a mentor and an inspiration. Always so upbeat and positive. I will never forget her and will try to be as active and upbeat as I age as she was! A truly amazing woman! My sincerest sympathy to Jim and Donna and all the Swearingen family. I know you will all miss her! But cherish every memory and know the love you share never dies! I will be at a cousin's Memorial in New York on September 20th, but I will be thinking of you all, too, and celebrating the life of my dear friend Evelyn! Love to all! Marilyn
