LOWELL -- Raymond E. Chandonnet, 84, a resident of the Centralville section of Lowell, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, August 20, 2017. He was the loving husband of Pauline L. (Duquette) Chandonnet, with whom he would have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on October 12.

Born in Lowell on April 3, 1933, he was a son of the late Edward J. and Albina (Beaudoin) Chandonnet.

Raymond's passions were in his faith, culture, education, and music as well as bookkeeping. A highly educated man, his language consisted of Latin, French and English. In addition to his career in teaching he also worked part time as a bookkeeper at various small companies, including Robinson Top Dye, Lifelinks, Inc., Aberjona Auto Parts and Merrimack Repertory Theater in order to pay for his children's college degrees. Prior to his teaching he pursued his passion in his faith in the Seminary and then enlisted in the US Army Reserves in1957 and was honorably discharged in 1963.

Prior to his passing, Raymond was a member of the Franco-American Day Committee where he was honored with the Man of the Year award by the veterans of St. Louis Church in 1990. He was actively involved in the former parish of St. Louis de France as a choir singer and director, a member of La Chorale Orion and the Spindle City Singers as well as a cantor at the St. Joseph the Worker Shrine.

In addition to his wife Pauline, he is survived by his children, Danielle Chandonnet of Manchester NH, Raymond Chandonnet and his wife Sheila of Summit, NJ, Michelle Gagnon and her husband Brian of Dracut, Paul Chandonnet and his wife Christianne of Flemington, NJ and Melanie Chandonnet of Dracut; his only surviving sibling, Rita Frechette; sisters-in-law, Mae Chandonnet, Simonne Chandonnet, Constance Jussaume and Elaine Duquette; as well as nine grandchildren, Christopher Feltes, Julia and Henry Chandonnet, Anthony and Eric Catenacci, Brian and Brandon Gagnon, Andrew and Aiva Pitman; and many nieces and nephews.

My deepest condolences to the Chandonnet family. Mr. Chandonnet was a kind and pleasant man. I was his daughter Celeste's best friend in first grade. I will never forget how wonderful Mr. Chandonnet was to me when I was working through my own grief of losing my best friend at such a young age. I will always remember the Chandonnet family with love in my heart.

Mr. Chandonnet was a superb teacher, one who continues to stay in my memory. I was very fortunate to be in his class for both 7th and 8th grade at Moody Jr. High School. I still have my English grammar notebook from 8th grade and fondly remember sentence diagramming at the blackboard, Rikki Tikki Tavi and Evangeline. I learned so much from him and his class. May he rest in peace!

To The Chandonnet Family:

I am very sorry to hear about the loss of Mr. Chandonnet. I had him as an English teacher at the Moody School in the early 80s. I will never forget how he got into character when he read Rikki-Tikki-Tavi to us. I also remember how he enjoyed our weekly Wordly Wise assignments. He was a great teacher.

My Deepest Sympathy,

"Chop chop the hands!"
Mr. C's warning to us if we messed up a prepositional phrase.
The Forrest Prime Evil poem by Longfellow that Mr. Chandonnet made us all learn then get up in front of the class and perform it. He would be on the floor laughing at the students who went way over the top in their performances. Such a great teacher, taught us so much more than what was in our text books.

Dear Chandonnet Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I have so many dear memories of Mr. Chandonnet when he was teaching at the Moody Jr. High School. I was in his class for my two years there 1981-1983. I have to say he was the best English Teacher I have ever had. He would sing songs to us in French but always made sure our lessons were completed. He was a truly remarkable person.
