Daniel Atcheson Obituary

Venice, Florida- Daniel Benn Atcheson, 74, of Venice Florida, passed peacefully from this life on April 6th, 2020. Dan died in his home, on his own terms, after a lengthy illness with his beloved bulldog Harvey by his side. Danny was born on June 30th, 1945 in Lubbock, Texas to James and Lucille (Heggen) Atcheson. He graduated from Texas Tech University in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and a minor in geology. Dan also attended Roscoe Wilson Elementary, J.T. Hutchinson Jr. High, and Monterey High Schools in Lubbock and was the 7th person to be inducted in to The Monterey High School Alumni Hall of Fame. Dan worked as a cost-estimator in the construction industry and later taught the subject in the engineering department at Texas Tech. He went on to author seven books on the subject and co-author four more with over 200,000 books sold. He was also a professional SCUBA diver for the State of Florida, and In his younger days he enjoyed skydiving and flying a para-motor. Dan was also a musician who played and recorded with popular West Texas musical groups. He was a founding member of The Velveteens who later became The Traveling Salesmen, signed to RCA Victor in 1967. While playing music, he also taught math full-time at Caroll Thompson Jr. High. After retiring from the music business, he went on to play drums in his church band for a number of years. He was also an accomplished wood carver, sculptor and poet and left behind many beautiful works of art as his legacy. Perhaps Dan's greatest passion in life was his love of the English bulldog breed. Dan got his first bulldog when he moved to Florida and quickly became an ambassador for the breed. He assisted in the rescue of many animals, particularly after hurricane Charley hit Florida and left many of them homeless. His most beloved bulldog, Baby, was his sidekick and they were the guests-of-honor at many civic and charity events, working with children with special needs and the Make-a-Wish Foundation, among many others. Left behind to cherish Dan's memory are his daughter, Tami Atcheson Cook and her husband Chris; his grandchildren Sophie and Cole Painter; his great granddaughter Emma Jeanne; Brother Michael Atcheson and wife Judi; sister Anne McNaughton and husband Robert; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom he adored. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Timothy. Dan will be missed terribly, but his family takes comfort in the knowledge that he lived well, loved deeply, and left nothing in his life undone. His was truly a life well-lived. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Buddies Thru Bullies, a nonprofit animal rescue group at www.buddiesthrubullies.org, PO Box 900747, Homestead, FL 33090. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date in his hometown of Lubbock, Texas.

I am very heavy hearted to learn of Dan's passing. Our mutual love of the bulldog breed brought us together on Facebook. I followed the website Baby The Bulldog for many years. We met a tad over 11 yrs. ago Dan, and I was always in amazement at your talents and skills. God knew that you could and would respect your gifts and I am so very blessed to have been permitted to witness a few of them. Prayers to your Family and Friends during this time of sadness. Danny was such a warrior for Christ and gave God all the Glory for the many things he accomplished in his life. I knew him as part of the band who played at sock hops at JT Hutchinson . I was in his brother Tim's grade at the time. However it has only been in the last several years that I have really gotten to know Danny on Facebook. Everyday it was a true joy to be a part of his life. I miss him so much. ♥

Dan was admired and respected by management and the editorial staff at Craftsman Book Company, Carlsbad, CA. We had the privilege of publishing and promoting Dan's books for over twenty years. Thousands of roofers, framers, excavation contractors and estimators have benefited from the information Dan created and shared during his long career as an author and educator. Through his books, Dan's talent will continue to inspire another generation of construction students and craftsmen. Dan will be missed. A truly unique and talented author and human being. Our condolences to Dan's family and friends.

Danny was such a talented man. He had may talents and was a pioneer of Lubbock in which he shared those talents. His love of animals brought us together on FB. Such a kind man with a huge heart for animals (especially English Bull dogs) My daughter and her husband own 2 of them. Another thing we had in common was my brother is also named Danny. So I connected with Danny on more than one level. He had a FB page that displayed his many carved sculptures along with our daily dose of Harvey his beloved pet. Those daily posts are so missed by a huge following. Danny talked about his love for Harvey and some previous English Bull dogs that had passed. He gave them all very happy lives. He spoke often of his beautiful daughter Tami and his love for her and his grandchildren and great grandchild. He was so very proud of them all. He made arrangements for Harvey knowing that when he passed Harvey would have a long loving home. He was a man of God. He said he was ready to meet his Savior when the time came. I pray for Tami and the family. He was an amazing man and left them a legacy. The Lord be with you all in this time of healing and learning to move on. Just know you will see him again. I believe my Lords promises!

Danny, it was so very wonderful to know you. You were such a grand artist and such a kind soul to adore furry ones, many that you rescued & gave wonderful forever loving homes. You are & always will be in a place in my heart. Someone once told me, as long as memories remain in the heart, there is no death of that memorie. I wish you peace, a well deserved rest. You are free of suffering, you are back with your loved one. Farewell dear friend xoxoxo
