Murray Rosen Obituary

Murray Rosen
SCARBOROUGH -- Murray Rosen passed away on May 8, 2013, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough following a brief illness, with his wife Shirley and friends at his side.
He was born on Aug. 9, 1927, to Harry and Betty Winthrop Rosen. Murray attended schools in Brooklyn and the Manhattan School in New York City. He graduated Pratt Institute and went on to work in Burbank, Calif., for Walt Disney Studios on the Dumbo Project as a Cartoonist. Later in life he often said 'I wish I had saved those original cartoon cells!' Murray returned to New York and worked for Famous Studios that created Little Lulu and Popeye cartoons.
After marrying his wife Shirley Binder on May 27, 1956, they moved to Maine where Murray operated an installation company for a friend's storm window firm, remaining in the storm window business for 20 years after selling Triangle Window Company, a firm of which he was President.
Following retirement, Murray had many things in life that he loved to do and that kept him busy. He performed in many theater productions at the Jewish Community Center when they were located on Cumberland Avenue and loved to make people laugh. In the past few years, he was a Deputy Registrar for the City of Portland at the Barron Center. Murray loved cooking and grilling on the BBQ and often found himself playing the role of short order cook at everyone's homes. He prepared dinners for various organizations and enjoyed each and every minute of his time in the kitchen.
Murray was a member and the President of B'nai Brith Cumberland Lodge from 1971-1980 and President of the State of Maine Council from 1978-1980. He was also a member of Temple Beth El and Etz Chaim where he
Murray Rosen
attended services regularly, as well as attending services at Chabad and Shaarey Tphiloh. Rabbi Akiva Herzfeld often said that Murray could tell more jokes in one minute than most people could speak. Murray loved people and they loved him. Once he made a friend, they became a part of his and Shirley's extended family.
The greatest loves of his life were his wife Shirley, his children and grandchildren. Murray took pride in his children and grandchildren for their many accomplishments and his eyes would light up when they came to visit or would call to just talk. He was always there for this family and friends and always gave of himself.
Murray is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Shirley Binder Rosen; son Barry and Deirdre Rosen and their children Gregory and Brendan; daughter Nancy and Neil Rosen and their children Scott, Matthew and Daniel; sister-in-law Jenny Binder; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Murray was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Betty Winthrop Rosen; mother and father-in-law, Lena and Joseph Binder; brothers-in-law, Saul and Harry Binder and sister-in-law, Nan Binder.
Funeral services will be held at Temple Beth El, 400 Deering Ave. in Portland on Friday, May 10, at 12:30 p.m., with interment at Memorial Park. Friends and family will be greeted at Temple Beth El immediately following the burial. Funeral arrangements have been made through the Jewish Funeral Home. Shiva will be observed at the family home, 11 Four Winds Rd. in Portland, on Saturday, May 11 beginning at 8:45 p.m.; Sunday, May 12 at 5 p.m. and Monday, May 13 at 6 p.m.
Donations in Murray's memory may be made to Temple Beth El in Portland, Gosnell House in Scarborough, or a charity of your choice.

Shirley, I remember working with Murray at Penneys. He would always come to my desk and wait for me to pull out chocolate chip cookies that I always would bring in. One time I made them with pistachio pudding which gave them a green tint. Noone else would touch them, but Murray came over and grabbed a few and told me they were great. Others followed after he took them (guess he had to be the guinea pig to try them). He was always one to make everyone laugh and was a great human being, caring and fun. He is will greatly missed. You were very lucky to have such a treasure for so many years. The Good Lord above will watch over him and in turn Murray will watch over you. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Shirley and Family; I am so very sorry to hear about your loss. I am just finding out that Murray had passed away. My condolences go out to you and your family. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. It has been many years that our families have known each other. He was a great guy with a good sense of humor and fun to be around. He always put a smile on my face no matter what kind of mood I was in. I could count on him to be there to do that for me. I have many good memories of working with Murray and my dad. We had some great times. Murray will be missed by all that knew him. He will now be looking down on all of you as an Angel from above. My God Bless you all and heal your pain and sorrow.
