Andrew Cloutier Obituary

PORTLAND - Andrew John Cloutier, 56, died unexpectedly at his Portland home on Nov. 20, 2018, the apparent victim of a sudden cardiac event. He was a kind, caring and fun-loving soul, and he will be forever missed by his extended family and many friends. He will be remembered with a smile.

Andrew was born in Portland, the son of the late William P. Cloutier and the late Alberta G. Cloutier. He grew up in the Meetinghouse Hill section of South Portland with his four brothers and two sisters. He attended Holy Cross School and graduated from Cheverus High School in 1980. Later, Andrew earned a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Southern Maine, and thereafter received the degree of Juris Doctor from Vermont Law School in May 1991. Andrew practiced law for nearly thirty years as a partner in the downtown Portland law firm of Cloutier, Conley & Duffett, P.A. until his untimely passing.

Andrew was a man of principle and high ethical standards, and his legal clients appreciated his thoughtful and compassionate way. While fiercely independent, his family and friends knew him as genuine and engaging with a great wit and sense of humor. He relished every opportunity to argue the contrary position.

Andrew loved sports. He competed well in baseball, basketball, tennis and golf in his younger years, and he was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics. As an adult, he derived tremendous enjoyment from golf with family and friends at Purpoodock Club and later in the Maine State Golf Association weekly tournament schedule. He cherished every opportunity to tee it up with his beloved son, Nic.

Andrew was predeceased by his loving parents. He is survived by his son, Nicholas M. Feeney, of Washington, D.C., and by six brothers and sisters and their spouses, Paul J. Cloutier and his wife, Ann K. Cloutier; James F. Cloutier and his wife, Margaret A. Cloutier; Mark A. Cloutier and his wife, Anna M. Cloutier; Thomas W. Cloutier and his wife, Lisa J. Friedlander; Mary J.C. Hinman and her husband, Timothy E. Hinman; and Anne C. White and her husband, Michael A. White. In addition, he is survived by thirteen nieces and nephews and four great-nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Pius X Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 30, on the Feast of St. Andrew, followed by interment at Old Calvary Cemetery, in South Portland.

Just hearing about Andrew's sudden passing and my heart is heavy. From Angell Avenue to Olive Road., it would be hard to find someone who didn't know the Cloutier family. My sister Anne was very good friends with Mary and Tommy and I was great friends with both Andrew and Ann . My junior high and high school years were spent with Andrew and Ann and many many friends and acquaintances from Cheverus and Catherine McAuley. The sporting events., the dances., the friendships, the bumper pool table, and hanging out in the basement of 9 Olive....and Friday night pizza from Nano's variety, my dad would always see the Cloutier Boys (your family and tj's family too) at Purpoodock.. my mind has been going back to all the memories that we all had. Andrew was a genuine person with a big heart. I wish you all comfort through this trying time. God speed Andrew., and until we meet again may God hold you in the palm of his hand..

Dear Jim,

My heart is heavy with sadness because of the loss of Andy. I spent a lot of time yesterday thinking about the Cloutiers from Angell Avenue. I have so many fond memories of Andy. To me, he was the kid brother in the Cloutier clan --- the youngest boy in a family of five boys. Every time I saw Andy, he was happy and full of life. I am so sorry that this wonderful young man was taken from us way too soon. I'm sure he is now in Heaven with your mother and father. I'm sorry I can't make the celebration of Andy's life event this Friday. I will be there in spirit and I will be thinking about all the members of your family. May God give you the strength to make it through this difficult time.

Your old friend,

Rick

Andy, we didn't get to play Golf once more and laugh with each other, little too much snow Thanksgiving week, that would not have stopped us, but the brutal cold did. Most fun ever had going to CC Courthouse was checking something quick at CC Registry and seeing my friend Andy, Golf, Cloutier Family, sports, even what did you shoot at Purpoodock or on a MESGA Course last, you always beat me except maybe on putting green. Andy, you're leaving all of us way too young, You're another example that bad things happen to good People. Dick Cervizzi
