Jeanne Batchelor Obituary

Jeanne Sharlene Nadder Batchelor longtime resident of Narberth, Pennsylvania, died peacefully in her sleep on June 10, 2013 at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Cheryl Batchelor, in Alexandria, Virginia. Jeanne was born in Yonkers, New York in 1922 to Samuel and Louise Nadder, who had emigrated from Persia early in the century. At 16, Jeanne joined her older sister, the late Rose Piroeff, on Avon Road in Narberth; and she was graduated from Lower Merion High School, Class of 1939. Jeanne joined the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps in 1943 and worked as an assistant to the Regimental Information and Education Officer at Fort Benning, Georgia. Jeanne was in charge of the War Information Center, organizing orientation talks, updating maps, handling foreign language materials and tests. Jeanne also produced the soldier's Variety Show to boost the morale of deploying troops. Jeanne obtained the rank of Sergeant, separating in February 1946, and earning the American Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal , WAAC Service Ribbon. Returning from active duty, Jeanne married her high school classmate, the late U.S. Army Reserve First Lt. Calvin R. Batchelor, of Narberth. Jeanne and Cal built a family life in Narberth, first on Merwyn Road and then on Anthwyn Road, that extended across seven decades and through the raising of five sons, John, Kevin, Mark, Peter and Paul, all of whom were graduated from Lower Merion High School. Jeanne devoted her gifts to her family and her community, working for many years as a teacher's aide in the Lower Merion School District. Jeanne's sons remember her as a loving, vivid, courageous and tireless leader. John recalls Mother calling out "Supper! Do you hear me?" from the back steps on summer evenings. Kevin pictures Mother reminding the boys, "Your Father will be home soon, so you better behave." Mark remembers Mother, on many Christmas mornings, after the gifts were open, darting upstairs for more surprises from Santa that had been overlooked in the excitement. Jeanne is survived by her five sons and their spouses, Bonnie, Debbie, Lou Ann, Christine and Cheryl, as well as her beloved seven grandchildren, Kathryn, Justin, Samuel, Travis, Elizabeth, William and Anna, who called her, "Nana." Jeanne is also survived by her beloved niece, Sharline Fulton, with her children Lynne and Andrew. Jeanne's cremains will be interred beside her beloved husband Cal, at the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.

I grew up next door to the Batchelors, moved away when I was 13, and finally returned for a visit in 2007. I knocked on Jeanne's door and re-introduced myself and spent a lovely half hour catching up with her. She was cheerful, beautiful, and proud of her sons, as she always had been. She was such a regular presence in my childhood, I was happy to have gotten another chance to see her. My condolences to the family.

Jeanne Batchelor was one special lady who made my time at Bala Cynwyd JHS a better one because of her unique way she did not only her work, but the folks like me, enjoy my position as an instrumental music educator. She helped me, and others, I'm sure, look forward to coming to school every day. It was her positive attitude that made all of us feel comfortable in a place where everyone needed to produce. Yes, educators needed to produce excellent results from their students and we loved doing it. For me, one reason was three of her sons, Mark, Peter and Paul were part of our music program. As a result of our musical successes, our 1974 Jazz Band was selected, through audition, to present a concert tour through Romania. Jeanne and Martha Seifert were marvelous as chaperones for the three weeks we were there. Another of Jeanne's jobs, though self made, was that of matchmaker. Jeanne knew my first marriage was failing, and knew of one of our science teachers who was divorced, and tried to "set us up". It worked, and we recently celebrated our 34th anniversary. God bless you, Jeanne for that. My wife, Nancy and I remember Jeanne Batchelor with great respect and love.
May she continue to rest in peace in God's love.

Mrs. Batchelor was the first person that we met when we moved to PA and went to register me for BCJr High. I had made my mom promise that I wouldn't have to play in orchestra, but when Mrs. Batchelor heard that I played violin, she just cheerfully signed me up saying, "Oh you'll love our music director Len Murphy!" Boy was she ever right! I owe her such a debt of gratitude. Our family has laughed about that story for many years. She will surely be missed. Our heartfelt condolences.

I appreciated Jeanne's working in the office at Bala Cynwyd Jr. High School and her being the mother of such good boys, some of whom were in my English classroom. Condolences to the family.

Jeanne welcomed me to my first teaching job at Bala Cynwyd (then) Junior High. She was the first smiling face I saw each morning. I recall many pleasant conversations with her as I learned to not only "navigate the system" but to grow into adulthood. My condolences to all her family in this very difficult time. What a wonderful lady!
