Hans Walter Obituary
Mansfield - Hans Walter lived to see more in his first three decades than could fill shelves in a library. A life that was the material for a gripping memoir or historical movie ended quietly as he died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, April 20, 2018 in Whetstone Gardens and Care Center. He was 96.
Born December 14, 1921 in Berlin, Germany, to O. August and Pauline (Flatow) Walter, Hans came to this country in 1951, a survivor of five concentration camps - including Auschwitz. Hans was the last surviving member of the Jewish prisoners used in the Nazi counterfeiting exercise Operation Bernhard.
He was a life member of both the NRA and Kol Israel Foundation, a former member of Emanuel Jacob Congregation and retired from General Motors in 1980 as a model maker with 25 years of service.
Hans is survived by his daughter Debbie Walter and his son David Walter both in Columbus; a brother Gilbert Walter in Campbell, CA, a sister Margot Rosenbaum in Winnipeg, Canada; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Gisele (Neumann) Walter; a daughter Manuela Walter Smith, and a brother Werner Walter.
The Walter family will receive friends Tuesday, April 24, 2018 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the FInefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. His funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. led by Cantor Nancy Shimer. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery.
Contributions in his memory to Kol Israel may be made at the funeral home.

Hi,
I used to work at Cedar Village in Mason, Ohio and knew Hans. He was such a caring and friendly man and well liked by everyone he met. He was so proud of his past and how he survived the concentration camps. I got to interview him for a school project for my daughter. What a life well lived!! He will be missed very much. It was an honor to have known him even if for a short time.
