Michael Rosenbaum Obituary

Michael Eli Rosenbaum M.D.
Beloved Father, Friend and Doctor
Sausalito
Dr. Michael Rosenbaum, a pioneer in the practice of complementary and alternative medicine, passed away on March 9th in Greenbrae, California, surrounded by his daughters, close colleagues and friends. He had just celebrated his 74th birthday while in the hospital.
Dr. Rosenbaum was born and raised in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn New York, and attended Yeshiva University High School, Brooklyn College and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine where he obtained his medical degree. During medical school, Dr. Rosenbaum also earned a Masters degree in biochemistry, which subsequently inspired his practice of complementary medicine.
Dr. Rosenbaum initially pursued a career in psychiatry, completing his psychiatric residency at San Francisco General Hospital in the early 1970s. However, he concluded that the treatment of patients by standard allopathic medicine was not his calling. Instead, he became one of the early pioneers in the practice of complementary medicine, a discipline that has now been recognized nationally and internationally.
He was the co-founder of the Wholistic Health & Nutrition Institute in 1974, one of the first integrative medical establishment in Northern California. He was a long standing member of multiple professional medical societies, including the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, the American Academy for Advancement in Medicine, and the Orthomolecular Medicine Society (later Orthomolecular Health Medicine) founded by Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling and Dr. Richard Kunin, where he also served as President for 2 years and was the long term Co-Director of Continuing Medical Education. Dr. Rosenbaum was also the author or contributing author of many books and scientific publications.
He moved to Marin County, California and began seeing patients in 1974. Both his colleagues and patients revered him for both his medical insights, diagnostic skills and his compassionate care for his patients.
In the late 1980s, as chronic fatigue patients were becoming more numerous, Dr. Rosenbaum wrote a book addressing the issue. He treated many patients with this diagnosis, and was often able to unravel the underlying illness responsible for the complaints of chronic fatigue, as well as other complex autoimmune disorders, and Lyme Disease.
Dr. Rosenbaum was noted not only for his medical skills, but his general love of life. He enjoyed classical music and jazz, was a passionate movie buff and piano player, and a connoisseur of fine food and Japanese teas.
He is survived by his daughters Autumn and Crystal, his colleagues, and a multitude of patients, many of whom credit him with having saved their lives.

Two years later, still have not found a doctor who can help in the way that Michael could help. Still missing his gentle, insightful genius and his caring of the heart for his patients.

"I am so sorry to learn about Michael's death. He saved my life when no other doctor could diagnose my condition. I'll never forget his kindness and his joyful spirit."

I wish Michael a joyful journey in the Creator's hands. Michael and I graduated Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1967, 50 years ago this month. I have also been practicing holistic integrative medicine over these years. I moved to LA in 1986. It has been a joy to consult with Michael. I referred my wife to him and I am grateful for his care for her. Michael has always been a solid, sensitive, wise good person. I am grateful to have been his friend. My condolences to his family, friends and patients.

I just learned of Michael's death, and am deeply sad. Michael and I were good friends in college; he introduced me to my husband, who was his medical school roommate. We remained friends and in touch for many years, visiting each other on the infrequent cross country trips. But we had lost touch. I just learned that my children had invited Michael to a surprise 50th anniversary party they made for us--that is evidence of the deep connection, even without regular conversation , that we felt for Michael. Now,my children know why he didn't respond.....our condolences to Michael's children.

I am so sorry to hear of his passing. He was the only Doctor I ever trusted. Diagnosed me in the early 90's when all other docs said it was in my head. He was one of a kind. Will miss him terribly!

Dr. Rosenbaum was the only doctor in my 20+ years of illness who was able to successfully diagnose and treat me. I owe him my life. He was an incredible human being. I will miss him greatly.

Dr. Rosenbaum found the culprit of my chronic fatigue diagnosis in 1996, and it shed light on something that was so mysterious back then. I am forever grateful for his knowledge, kindness and insight into helping me. Condolences to the Rosenbaum family!

I have been a patient of Michael's since 1996, and we became friends. i have numerous autoimmune diseases, multiple chemical sensitivity, chronic fatigue syndrome, and other problems -- most genetic, some from pesticide and other chemical exposures. So conventional medicine found me to be an anathema. I was referred to Dr Rosebaum by other complementary physicians and because of his book on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. He was a remarkable physician, always reading and growing, very kind, and very intelligent. We were the same age, born a few months apart, because of which we felt a bond. He was my immunologist, and i am grieving now for a special friend and the doctor i needed most to help me deal with chronic viruses, immune system rebuilding, and the many prescriptions that many conventional physicians are hesitant to write because they are technically "controlled substances" even though they are essential to controlling (e.g.), seizures. Most of all i will miss his humor, smiles, and personal warmth, and our sharing of the latest research (together with citations!) to be discussed at the next appointment! Ke Akua p a hui hou, Michael. May you travel in light. Aloha oe. Karen Ann Watson-Gegeo (PhD, Anthropology)
