Steven Lowell Edde

Steven Edde Obituary

Steven Lowell Edde A longtime San Anselmo resident, Steve passed away peacefully on January 20th, 2008 in the presence of his loving family at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica following a spirited battle with sarcoma cancer. Born on January 25, 1947 in Stockton, Steve moved to San Rafael when he was nine years old. Steve graduated from Terra Linda High School in 1964, attended College of Marin, obtained a BS in Industrial Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley in 1969, and received his MS degree in Systems Management. Steve is survived by Kathleen, his childhood neighbor, high school sweetheart and wife of 39 years, his children Holly of San Rafael, and Michael of San Francisco, his mother Mickey of San Rafael, sister Leta of Cameron Park and his mother-in-law Jacqueline Fields of San Rafael. He is preceded in death by his father Lowell (Hap) Edde and his father-in-law Alfred (Dee) Fields. Steve had a larger than life presence and was passionate about things dear to his heart. He loved family, friends, cooking, outdoor adventures, music, and sports. While attending UC Berkeley, Steve joined the Cal marching band and has been an emphatic Cal fan ever since. Steve's enthusiasm for living life to its fullest was felt by those around him and he will be greatly missed at all of the annual events which he organized for family and friends each year. Family trips to Cal's Lair of the Bear Camp, the Edde Canoe Trip and Cal/Stanford Big Game experiences just won't be the same without his joyful laugh, infectious singing voice and warm leadership. Steve worked as an Industrial Engineer for the US Navy at the Alameda Naval Air Station for 33 years. After the base closure in 1997, he switched roles and became an Environmental Engineer, managing base cleanup and transfer. In 2003, Steve retired from the Navy and went to work for Innovative Technical Solutions, Inc. to serve as the company's liaison to Navy Projects. Steve's life will be celebrated at a memorial service at UC Berkeley's Faculty Club this Saturday, February 2nd at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the UCSF Foundation, Attention Dr. Carlos Corvera's Liver Tumor Research, C/O Regan Botsford, 44 Montgomery St. Suite 2200, San Francisco, 94104, or the charity of your choice.

Steven was a gentleman full of charm and delightful jokes to suit every day in life. We miss him and feel
sorry for your early loss. Your Christmas card with greetings and prints of your 4 young Grandchildren growing up, as well the five adults; many thanks and we save all family memories. My sons here in one way had to replace my dear wife Jenny in July 2005. Life has to continue despite sadness. Katty, our best combined good wishes from my children, and now twenty years old.

I was very sad to hear of Bubba's passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family. It is truly amazing that seeing Bubba for just one week a year can make so many wonderful memories. The Lair will not be the same without him.

Kathi, Holly, Mike, & Leta:
With our deepest sympathy to all of you.
Steve:From grade school through high school & the many canoe trips & dinners we attended together we can only picture you with your warm smile, beaming personability & funny songs that you could adjust to fit whoever you were with. Also I had a great true friend that loved food as much as me.
We will miss you so much, but keep the dinner plates & wine glasses ready for us.
Love You:

I met Steve, Kathy and Holly at our health club. Steve was "larger than life" , as they all say, and he inspired me to live life fully and in the present. Wish he didn't leave us so soon, wanted to play poker and drink beer this year. In the movie, "The Bucket List" Morgan Freeman said that the Egyptians, at the gates to heaven asked: Did you live your life with joy, and, did you bring joy to others?". Steve did both without a doubt and the world is less joyful without him here. I will miss Steve and send my love to Holly and Kathy. Mark Noguchi

Steve Edde exuded life! I will remember him for his strong handshake, big smile and gregarious nature. The world is a worse place for his passing, but heaven has a new angel who is going to make a lot of friends in heaven just as he did here on earth! God bless the Edde family.

Steve was the most cheerful and optimistic man I’ve ever met. Although we didn’t work with each other for very long, I valued the time that we did spend in the office, at lunch, or even carpooling as we discussed every thing from politics to poker. Kathy, Holly and Michael, we are so sorry for your loss. Please know that the thousands who called Steve their friend had richer lives because of him.

How I'll miss you Steve - from doing our senior project together at Cal to watching the amazed faces of waitresses as you order food in Cantonese at Joy Luck! Rest in peace my old friend. To quote an old Irish inscription, "Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, Love leaves a memory no one can steal".

With saddness we read of Steve's death. We always thought he would beat this cancer. Steve was so full of life. He made everyone around him that much more positive and upbeat. We will always remember working with him at NADEP, playing softball, and those rafting trips! A bright light has gone.

What a terrible loss for all of us who knew and loved Steve, but especially for his dear family. Our thoughts are with you. We have great memories of him over our years at the Lair, our beloved Bubba, and the friendship we developed here at home. May these precious recollections comfort all of us at this sad time. He was such a warm, welcoming gentleman ... we shall miss him terribly. God bless.

Steve is a very good friend. We both started our first job at Naval Air Rework Facility and received job offers before the base closed on the same days.We have great memories of work, playing poker and eating.
Steve had a special gift to make us laugh, enjoy life and to always be happy.
Beverly and I are thankful that we we had an opportunity to speak to Steve and the family at Santa Monica. I said to him, "Hoe Pang Yow", Chinese for best friend. He knew more about Chinese gourmet food that I did! Beverly chatted with Steve and asked him to smile and he did from ear to ear. We love you, Steve. Thank you for making our lives richer. Take care, Kathy, Holly, Michael and family. You are in our prayers.

I feel honor to a known one of the nicest persons I've ever met like Steve. I feel like I known him for a long time for such a short time I've known him. He brought great vibes when he visited our office and it was great to have the opportunity for our staff to go out to lunch with him. He will be greatly missed.

Kathy and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Steve was a person of enormous spirit, and I consider myself lucky to have known him. I have fond memories from way back including the NARF/NADEP softball team and the infamous Mexico trip. Steve put up one hell of a fight, more than most people could. You don’t do that for yourself, you do it for your family.
My deepest condolences.

Working with Steve on the environmental remediation and property reuse activities at NAS Alameda was a great pleasure for me. He greeted everyone with open arms, always had a smile on his face, and was never at a loss for sharing a kind word. Steve touched a lot of people's lives over the years which was evident at his retirement party on Treasure Island. I was sorry to hear the news about Steve's passing and offer my deepest condolences to the family. God bless you all during this difficult time.

I met Steve Edde when I was in BRAC Office (Contracts Dept) in Columbia St. San Diego. Right away I felt comfortable talking to him, like I knew for a long time. His presence to this office brightened everyone's day with his laughters and good sense of humor. He was a well respected man. I will never forget you Steve Edde. I will miss you a lot. Dear Kathy - I wish to use your media, and sign Steven's book of condolences as well. Sadly like me you have now lost your 'soul mate'
just as life started to become fairly carefree and enjoyable. My message is short: saviour every moment and stay positive. You also have two wonderful kids as future support. Love from Dick, Leif & Karl.

To The Edde Family:
There will never be another Steve. My friend of 51 years was so special, not just to me, but to all my family. One of my favorite memories (and there are so many) was having “Reverend” Steve, (if you please), officiate at my son’s wedding last September. Steve may be gone but his larger than life image lives on in each of the lives he has touched.

Steve's death is a great loss. He had a spirit and an enthusiasm for life that was an inspiration. Steve’s presence brightened a room and he kept his positive outlook even through the horrible cancer process. If a man is measured by his friends, then Steve is 10 feet tall because he gave his friendship from his heart.
My heart goes out to Kathy, Holly, and Michael and I hope you find some solace in the many wonderful memories and the many friends that are here to support you.
