Phyllis Shotland Obituary

Phyllis (Slone) Shotland, 91, of Longmeadow, MA, formerly of Bronx, NY passed away on March 15th, 2017 at Baystate Medical Center. She was the wife of Seymour "Sy" Shotland for 66 years. Phyllis was a graduate of Hunter College and Hofstra University where she earned her masters degree in education. Phyllis was fluent in five languages including Spanish, which she taught in the Levittown, NY public school system for 22 years. During World War II, she was employed by the Voice of America as an interpreter. She was an active member of Sinai Temple and the JCC in Springfield, MA. She was predeceased by her husband, Sy Shotland, her son, Dr. Ian L. Shotland, and her granddaughter, Amy Lyons Shotland. Phyllis is survived by her son and daughter-in law, Terry and Vicki Shotland of Longmeadow; two grandchildren, Brian Andrew Shotland and Emily Rachel Shotland, nephews, nieces, and cousins. Her funeral will be 10:00 AM Friday (TODAY) March 17th at Sinai Temple, 1100 Dickinson St. Springfield, MA with burial in Cedar Park Cemetery, Paramus, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made to Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, MA., Hadassah of Newton Centre, or any charity of your choice. Phyllis was a lovely quiet spirit and a wonderful mother and grandmother. We are so sorry to hear of your loss. She will be truly missed.

Phyllis was a fascinating person and great intellect. She was a great conversationalist even after her eyesight declined and she could not always see the person she was talking to. She continued to show a great interest in me, my wife, the rest of our family, and world events. Best wishes to Terry, Vicki, and family.
