Efrem Gordon Obituary

Atty. Efrem A. Gordon died in the early morning hours of Tuesday, December 3, 2019 following a valiant battle with Parkinson's Disease. As an attorney and servant of the people, Mr. Gordon was known for his erudition, sense of fairness and keen analytical mind. He was born in Springfield, Massachusetts and lived in Hampden County all the years of his life. Acknowledged as being the longest practicing Harvard Law School graduate, Mr. Gordon was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1951 and practiced law for 62 years. Efrem was predeceased by his parents Atty. Louis J. Gordon and Rebecca Matilda Rosnick. He is survived by his brother, inventor, engineer and philanthropist Bernard Marshall Gordon, his children by his first wife Marion Cohen Rosen: Lisa Jane Gordon (sons Jesse Gordon Dabbs and Austin Micah Dabbs), Dean Douglas Gordon and James Lincoln Gordon; his son and stepdaughter by his second wife Genevieve Williams: practicing attorney Lewis Hamilton Gordon, (wife Robin, sons Ethan and Spencer) and Kathy Hickson Weiner. In the 1940s and 50s, prior to the birth of their children, Efrem and Marion led bicycling tours across Europe. In the 1970s, Efrem and Genevieve hosted jazz musicians at his elegant French restaurant, Picot's Place in Hampden. Efrem was a music lover and a discerning record collector of jazz improvisors and vocalists. His favorite vocalist was Dinah Washington. A well-trained classical violinist, he exemplified the beautiful tone and sophisticated technique of the Russian school of violinists. His greatest pleasure on the instrument came from playing along with his Stephane Grappelli records - seemingly effortlessly, and accurately. Mr. Gordon served in the U.S Navy as the commanding officer of one troop landing craft (LCI) and two tank landing ships (LSI) in the South Pacific in WWII. A highly decorated veteran, he received commendations including 1 star for the Philippine Liberation, 2 stars for the Asiatic Pacific Theater, and a Victory Ribbon and Letter of Commendation from Gen. Robertson of the 1st Australian Army. Efrem's sense of humor was dry and intelligent, which all of his children enjoyed greatly. He knew more about classic cars and bicycles than most. Efrem A. Gordon lived a colorful, useful life while being a private, modest and honorable man. He was loved and will be missed. The Ascher-Zimmerman Funeral Home is helping the family. A memorial service will be announced at a future date. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be sent in Efrem's honor to the Parkinson's Foundation.

I worked for Mr. Gordon in the early 1980's and he left quite an impression on me. I am sorry to learn of his passing, but know that he was a man who enjoyed life to the fullest and I sincerely doubt that he ever wasted a day. My condolences to his family and friends. He will remain endeared to me forever.

Efrem was an extraordinary man. My parents first engaged him personally but their relationship grew very personal. He was like a part of our family my parents travelled with him and saw him regularly. My brother Alan and I bothe worked in his office in the summers. My mother, Dutchie, doted on his children and she loved them dearly.
I was fortunate to practice law for many years in NYC and DC, where I came in contact with many skilled lawyers well known in their practice fields. Efrem was as talented a lawyer as the best of them. He was a genius in the courtroom.

Efrem was a wonderful longtime friend. We were fellow Hampdenites. His Picot's Place was where Bill brought the Modern Jazz Quartet after their 'gig' @ Springfield College. Efrem once put on a chauffeur's cap & had Bill sit in the back seat of his Rolls Royce for a fancy ride, both having a hilarious laugh at the event. We remember Lewis as a fine young fellow. Marilyn's 70th birthday had Efrem come to the party @ the Hampden House.

The world needs more the likes of Efrem Gordon!

Efrem was a mentor to so many attorneys, including myself. He was a brilliant trial lawyer, a remarkable wordsmith who also possessed a wonderfully dry sense of humor. Above all, Efrem was a true gentleman and a passionate believer in the American judicial system.

Efrem was one of a kind and will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Very impressed with Attorney Gordon's service to his country, educational and musical accomplishments, and especially his dedicated service to people over the course of such a long and distinguished legal career. He always presented as a pleasant and kind soul in court, and was a very special gift given to our community...Advocates with his character, capacity and temperament are rare gems indeed.

A much storied presence in our Western Mass legal pond for decades. Efrem was a brilliant lawyer. Witty and ever entertaining. Understood what it means to be a zealous advocate for his clients. Lived a rich, full life. My sympathy to his family.
