George D'Angelo Obituary

D'Angelo, Dr. George J.George J. D'Angelo, MD passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2014, at the age of 91 in North Andover, MA. He was an eminent thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon, who, for 40 years tirelessly sought out the very best for his patients and the community. He was born on November 8, 1923 and was the oldest child of John Mario and Josephine D'Angelo of Bethlehem, PA. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 and participated in the invasion of Okinawa. He received his undergraduate degree at Lehigh University and then graduated from the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Duke University Medical Center. He married the love of his life, Mary, in 1947 and they moved to Erie in 1958. After moving to Erie, PA, Dr. D'Angelo became the recipient of the John A. Hartford grant to develop a laboratory for the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease at what is now the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center Hamot. In 1962 he led the team that performed the first open heart surgery in northwestern Pennsylvania at Hamot. His patient was an 11-year old boy named John Chioti. The surgery was to repair a hole in his heart. Since then, Dr. D'Angelo has mended over 7,000 hearts and touched countless lives. He always found time to give back to the community of Erie, PA. He was president of the Erie Philharmonic for 6 years and was actively involved in bringing Maestro Walter Hendl as the Orchestra's director in 1976. Under his leadership, the Erie Philharmonic soared to new heights. During his tenure, he was instrumental in bringing Luciano Pavarotti to perform in Erie as well as Doc Severinsen. He and his wife, Mary, founded the D'Angelo Young Artist Competition bringing young classical musicians, established classical artists as judges, and world-wide recognition to the city of Erie. Some of the winners have gone on to perform at the Metropolitan opera and with other orchestras throughout the world. He endowed Mercyhurst University to create the D'Angelo School of Music and the Mary D'Angelo Performing Arts Center, named after his wife. The school continues to inspire young musicians from around the world. His encouragement of the arts has enhanced the arts in Erie. He also gave of his time and resources to the Boys and Girls Club of Erie to help create a preschool that bears his name. Survivors: Dr. D'Angelo is survived by his wife Mary of 67 years, his children Diane D'Angelo Reddy, MD, John D'Angelo, Josephine D'Angelo, George J. D'Angelo, II, and Gina D'Angelo as well as nine grandchildren, two great grand children, brothers and sisters and extended family. Services: A memorial service is planned in Erie, PA in January, 2015, the time and date to be determined at a later date. Contributions: In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Erie, PA, The Italian American Women's Association of Erie, PA or the American Heart Association.

Deepest Sympathy to Mrs. D'Angelo “When he shall die, Take him and cut him out in little stars, And he will make the face of heaven so fine That all the world will be in love with night And pay no worship to the garish sun.” William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet

Real love in life is not only to obtain what you love but to help others get to the place where they can reach for what they love. As a Patron of the Arts, that is what Dr. D'Angelo did. My mom says he was one of my heart doctors as a child. I remember him from when his wife, Mary & I and an Attorney's wife with not many more took an American Art History Class from a Priest at Gannon University. The class took a day trip to the Cleveland Museum. Dr. D'Angelo picked up lunch. I'm sure that was more about the Priest than me. Later I was to write Dr. D'Angelo to help the wife of Whitey Cleaver, my Uncle. Charlotte spent most of her life from the late 40's on in a nursing home with MS. I briefly attended Mercyhurst, I would often Pray there. He sent my personal request on to the Mercyhurst Music School who said they would arrange a music concert for the Residents of the home. I don't know if it was ever put together, most people don't understand or appreciate the power of ART & Music in an individuals life. My life has taken a dark turn, I am surrounded by non-artists who rant on with hatred and depravity towards me as a creative person. The place where I live is monsterous. I cried because so few Patrons of the Arts exist, so few who would take time from such a career to Buy Lunch for a group of poor students. Thank You & Mary for those moments to look back on, to lighten what has been a horror of a life. Remembering him gives me hope, when I will look upward at the stars he will be there.

My sympathy to Dr. D'Angelo's wife and family. In 1960, my parents were told there was now a surgery to repair a valve in my heart, and I was taken to Hamot. Then, I was 14 and in the 9th grade; today I feel so fortunate to be healthy at 68. When Dr. D'Angelo turned 40, I was invited to his birthday party at an Italian restaurant in Erie, that my mother and I attended. The party was with all the children he operated on at that point. I have a picture of me standing beside him along with other patients. It is amazing to know I was one of his first children that he operated on, in those pioneering years of heart surgery! Forever grateful for this wonderful man!

Dear Mary,

Doc George and I spent many a lunch at the Bel Aire, over that tall Root Beer and provolone cheese sandwich, discussing our plans for the GEYSO school district initiative. He was the one who took it to the Superintendent, and made it happen. The first time I ever saw a decent violin in any of the schools, I would find out that it and so many others had been donated by him. I will never, never, never forget him. Blessings to you, your children, and his memory. There are no words sufficient to describe the efforts he made, the lives he saved, and those he enriched. Thank you for sharing your lives with all of us.

Mary, family and friends,

I was just 2 years old when Dr. D'Angelo performed my heart surgery. In every subsequent encounter with him during my childhood, he was nothing but warm, compassionate and caring. I have a great amount of respect for him for not only his medical talents, but his role as a humanitarian in the Erie community. His always crowded office waiting room was a testament to the high regard in which he was held. He will be sadly missed.

Dear D'Angelo Family,
I was sorry to see that Dr. D'Angelo has passed away. Dr. D'Angelo was instrumental in guiding me into the health care field, a career that has spanned almost 50 years. I worked side by side with Dr. D'Angelo in the operating room and Intensive Care Unit. He taught me the importance of hard work and dedication to the patient. He inspired others and myself never to give up on a patient or doing the right thing.

Dr. D'Angelo was a courageous man pioneering new procedures and doing what others said was too risky. To my knowledge Dr. D'Angelo was never proved wrong.

Whatever I have done right in my life and career is largely due to my association with George. He was one of the brightest lights in my life. He was and will remain an inspiration to me.

Hail and farewell my friend, hail and farewell!

Dr. D'Angelo gave so much to our community. I think that he would want to be remembered as supremely devoted to his patients, a great humanitarian, and a surgical pioneer, in that order.

George led by example. When George asked for help for one of his beneficiaries, it was impossible, seeing what he had already done, to decline.

George, you are sadly missed.

Dear Mrs. D'Angelo and family,
My sympathies and prayers for you on the loss of Dr. D'Angelo. I'm not sure you will remember me, but when I was in 7th grade you hired me to assist my grandfather, Tony, who was your groundskeeper. I mowed your lawn, performed light maintenance duties and cared for your pool for about three years. It was great way for a young teen to learn responsibility, collaboration, and a solid work-ethic as I saved money to attend college.
Now, years later, that work-ethic has paid off, as I became a priest and pastor two parishes in the Diocese of Erie.
Thank you for the opportunity those years of formation have provided me.
I will offer a Mass for Dr. D'Angelo. As you prepare to return him to God who gave him life, know of my personal gratitude and support.
On behalf of myself and my parents, I wish you our deepest sympathies.
God Bless you,
Father Mark Hoffman
