Carol Tomlinson-Keasey Obituary

The founding chancellor of UC Merced, Carol Tomlinson-Keasey, who saw the institution through its infancy, died Saturday of complications related to cancer, according to a statement from the university. She was 66. As the first chancellor of UC Merced from 1999 to 2006, Tomlinson-Keasey was the driving force behind creating a research university from scratch in a Valley woefully underserved by the UC system and higher education in general.

For reasons I cannot explain, I was drawn to the local section of The Sacramento Bee this morning and learned of the passing of Dr. Tomlinson-Keasey. I was a student of Dr. Tomlinson-Keasey in a developmental psychology course at UC-Riverside in 1984. The material from her course not only remains with me as a practicing psychologist today but Dr. Tomlinson-Keasey's teaching style is one I have tried to emulate as a part-time college professor. I am very grateful to have been a student of Dr. Tomlinson-Keasey. My condolences to the Tomlinson and Keasey families.

I was very saddened to hear of Carol's death. I had the privilege of working with her in the early development of the UC Merced campus. She understood the needs of Central California and how a new UC campus could help address many of the region's biggest challenges. She had unbelievable energy, an unflagging desire to learn and a real empathy for the students of the San Joaquin Valley. She is one of the people that history will record has made a real difference in setting a positive path to the future for the Valley. And her contribution is shown every day in the lives of the students at UC Merced. The motto of the University of California is "Fiat Lux," Let there be light. Carol will certainly always be a shining light for the people of the Valley.
