Charles Hebard Obituary

Charles Donald Hebard Don Hebard, a 52-year resident of Campbell, died peacefully at home on September 25, 2009 of prostate cancer. He was 89 years of age. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Grace, his four children, son Mark Hebard, daughter Margaret Muscato, daughter Patricia Curtis, and son Douglas Hebard, and his thirteen grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. As a long-time supporter of Campbell and his larger community, he recently received a commendation from the California Legislature Assembly for his outstanding display of community service which included serving as Chairman of the Campbell Parks & Recreation Department, a member of the Santa Clara County Charter Review Committee, the Santa Clara County Supervisor Redistricting Committee, City of San Jose Los Gatos Creek Master Plan Committee, Campbell Elementary School Bond Oversight Committee, and the Campbell City Historic Preservation Board. After an eight-year stint on the Campbell Planning Commission, Don was appointed to the Los Gatos Creek Streamside Park Committee which was instrumental in developing the Los Gatos Creek Trail, the 9.7-mile pedestrian and bicycle trail that runs from Lexington Reservoir in Los Gatos through Campbell to Meridian Avenue in San Jose alongside Los Gatos Creek. Don also enjoyed competitive sailing and was a long time member of the San Jose Sailing Club. He competed in his El Toro sailboat, an 8-foot racing dinghy, in lakes and bays throughout the United States. Don spent most of his career as a commercial insurance broker with Hallin & Bookwalter in San Jose and was installed as a member of Lloyd's of London in 1979. He retired in 1995. Don was the son of Frank and Isabel Hebard and the grandson of Lewis Hebard, who built the first Lexington School in Los Gatos. He was born in Orcutt in Santa Barbara County and was the youngest of five siblings. They moved to the family ranch on Hebard Road in Los Gatos when his father retired from the oil fields. Don graduated from Los Gatos High School in 1937. He met his wife Grace at San Jose State College and they were married in 1944 at St. Patrick's Church on Easter Sunday, April 9th. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Services will be held on October 2, 2009 at the Darling Fischer Campbell Memorial Chapel located at 231 E. Campbell Ave, in Campbell with a public viewing beginning at 1:30 p.m. The service will begin at 2:00 p.m. A reception celebrating his life will follow after the services.

I was saddened to see this obituary for Don and my condolences go to Grace and his family. His efforts to trace his English cousins resulted in a trip for us to Grass Valley in 2005 and we were delighted to hear about the Californian side of the family. He inspired me to further research in England and visited us on a trip to the Isle of Man for further genealogical investigation a few years ago.

I was surprised and saddened to hear of Don's passing. I was out of town or would have attended his memorial service to honor his memory. I will never forget Don as one of the backbone supporters in the effort to save the 24 acre Winchester Drive in site as a recreational area for children. He walked his talk, was a tireless campaigner for the good of Campbell. In addition to all that we delighted in trying to top each other with interesting discoveries in our shared hobby of genealogy. He will be missed!

MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY GOES OUT TO THE HEBARD FAMILY. I DIDN'T KNOW MR. HEBARD, BUT I DID GO TO THE ORIGINAL LEXINGTON ELEMENTRY SCHOOL. IT WAS AN AWESOME SCHOOL, WITH THE HUGE OAK TREE, AND ROLLING HILL DOWN TO THE FOOTBALL AREA. OUR GRADUATING CLASS PLANTED TREES, ALONG SIDE OF THE BENCHES WITH HANDPRINTS IN THEM FROM PREVIOUS CLASSES. MAY MR. HEBARD REST IN THE ARMS OF OUR GREAT GOD, FOREVER, AND EVER.
