Charles Thompson Obituary

Charles (Chuck) Thompson

1-5-1927 to 12-20-2010

Resident of Los Gatos

Chuck Thompson passed away on Monday at the age of 83. He received his BA in Mathematics from Stanford University and his MA in Actuarial Science from University of Michigan. He married Betty Wanderer in San Jose in 1949. After living on the East Coast for a few years, they returned to California to work in the family business, Wanderer Electric, which he then ran successfully for over 50 years. He served on the Board of Directors for NECA and was on the NEC committee for many years.

Chuck was very proud to be a member of a number of organizations: Sainte Claire Club, SIRS, Saratoga Men's Club, Congress Springs Improvement Assn, Hakone Gardens, and Saratoga Sister City. Over the years, he was Treasurer or sat on the Board for many of these. Throughout his life, he was very active: tennis, golf, bike riding, swimming, hunting, hiking, and kayaking. He was an avid game player: bridge, dominoes, gin rummy, cribbage, etc.

He will be dearly missed by his wife of 62 years, Betty Thompson, his 3 daughters, Janet Egger, Nancy Thompson/Loeffler and Claire Schmidt, his 2 sons-in-law, Steve Loeffler and Mike Schmidt, and his 6 grandchildren, Jon Loeffler, Cristal Loeffler, Josh Loeffler, Sondra Egger, Michael Schmidt and Charlie Schmidt.

The family will be having a private memorial service. If you wish, memorial contributions may be made to pancreatic cancer research at pancan.org.

He will be remembered for his integrity, his gentle humor, and his strength of character.

To the Family of Charles Thompson,
Please accept my deepest sympathies on the passing of this great man. As a fellow member of the Sainte Claire Club, Congress Springs Improvement Association and the Outdoor Sports Duck Club his absence will be missed immencely. Chuck's quick wit and unique ability to extract humor from some of life's more common place events was second to none. And he did this in his understated style that made everyone comfortable and at ease. His love and dedication to family always shown through.
This remarkable man will certainly be missed by his many friends and especially his family. And for me it is particularly painfull as I come to grips with the fact that there is no longer time to "get even" with Chuck for all the many Gin Rummy payments I have paid to him over the years.....

Dearest Betty, Claire & family,

I was very sad when Ray told me the bad news. Sad for Betty - she will miss him, her soul partner. Sad for Claire (Janet & Nancy) - he was a great father. And Michael & Charlie (& their cousins) - he was super granddad. He will be missed so much. Our hearts feel for you. We will keep him in our prayers

God's will that he did not suffer too much.

I remember our meeting in the Galapagos well. Chuck was such a gentleman .. always looking after Betty. Such a happy couple.

We remember him showing us around his beautiful garden, making pancakes for Hamish for breakfast and allowing us to watch the squirrels (cute & quaint for us) in the park even though he thought they were right pests & ought to be shot!

Thank you Caire. It was v kind of you to remember us and let us know.

Dear Betty and family:
We just heard of Mr. Thompson's passing. I have fond memories of your wonderful family during my growing up years on Sky Oaks Way with Claire. Please know that you are all in my thoughts.

Dear Betty, Claire and all the Thompson family. Carole and I met Chuck (and Betty ) many years ago (1980s) when we did a cruise of the fabulous Galopalos Islands, Equador. After the cruise we bumped into them again in Quito. We must have hit it off,as they popped in to to say hello in Auckland ( New Zealand ) some years later ,and we (along with our kids ) stayed with them in California after a Suzuki Camp. They treated us like family ,and we got to know them real well. I've met many people in my line of trade, and thru out travels and I can sincerely say Chuck is one of the tops, a real gentleman .I hope he rests in peace.
